Good to consider the list of books as suggestions for those who may want to take a "baby step" look at what is in the Bible.

@bubba: I wouldn't recommend that. The letters are very context-oriented even for somebody who's read the rest of the bible, and most of the minor prophets just confuse ya. If you're looking for a starting snippet, I would suggest smaller subsections of easily digestible passages, like some parables or passages from Ephesians or Corinthians.

Or you could always start with Genesis...

I strongly recommend people start new testament, not Genesis. People who try and read it in order usually either get bored out of their skull or get alienated when they see God being so harsh and sometimes seemingly ridiculous in the early old testament. Give 'em a gospel. Matthew if they're a practicing Jew Mark if they're not the biggest reader Luke if they're primarily logical John if they're primarily emotional When in doubt, go with John.

I disagree with @zeller - the number after the name usually refers to the chapter. So 2 John is a letter, but John 2 is the second chapter of the gospel of John. Probably too late to change since it's been published, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I agree with cubsnskins: start with one of the four gospels, preferably Matthew or John. I'd also recommend Luke (since it's directed at someone who's unfamiliar with Jesus Christ), though it's a bit lengthy and might not hold the average person's attention for long if they're not already interested in the Bible.

Wait, you guys are arguing on what part of a book to read first? It may be the word of God, but every book should be read chronologically. There's reason it was ordered that way.

millandas: are you saying that the book was written chronologically, or the Bible. If the first, yes, obviously--the second, not at all--considering that Ezra and Nehemiah are #15 & 16 in Biblical order, but #30-something chronologically. #43 is the Gospel of John, when it was the 61st or 62nd written.

Good point Saintsfan. Many people don't realize that the Gospels, and Acts, were actually the LAST books written, decades after Jesus and Paul were gone from the scene.

@cubsnskins: Don't want to debate, but I think you're wrong there. If you're a Christian, you should know that it's difficult to have the Gospel without Genesis. Where did the world come from? Who created Man? Who is God? Why did Man sin? What is sin? If I was to suggest to anyone the order of how to read the books, I would tell them to read Genesis first, then a Gospel (perhaps Mark). The doctor tells you what's wrong with you before he gives you the cure.

@debate over which to read first: the New Testament is considered to be the fulfillment of the Old, so reading the Old first would be better so you understand all the allusions to it in the Gospels.

@BritneyKeira...you are correct about the early writing of Mark, but it was still written after the death of Paul.
