Oooh I love this. Is 2,000 the population cut-off point? There's an Ancaster in Lincolnshire but it's only tiny.

Some great place names! Got to love the English language for it's randomness at times!

Good quiz! Surprisingly tough. I've heard of them all, but couldn't drag some of them out in time. Howzabout Chester-le-Street as a bonus?

Godmanchester! Looking at the road signs on the A14 on the way to Cambridge has it uses.

Strange that nearly all the cesters are pronounced as just 'ster' for whatever reason (except cirencester perhaps). Also remembered godmanchester from seeing it on signs (it's hard to miss such a strange name)

Great idea. Surprising how many of these I have been to for one reason or another. Another two that I've visited are Brancaster (Norfolk) and Rocester (Staffordshire), both of which were more important in their time, as the '-cester/-caster' implies, of course.

Towcester is my favourite of these, from a pronunciation point of view.

Hmmm...not sure if Chester meets your criteria of ending in -chester. I guess in a weird way it does.

Fun fact (I'm surprised no one's mentioned this yet!): all of these endings come from the Latin "castra," meaning fort or camp. Many of these cities used to be Roman military installments in Britain, and they retain the name to this day. Cool, huh?

tbh444, it all makes sense if you live here. I was going to add it's simple because if there's a vowel sound before the 'cester', we don't pronounce the 'ce'. But I'd forgotten about Alcester, which is pronounced like the Irish province of Ulster. Anyway, what happened to Silchester? For some reason, it was the first one i entered!

Just knowing the names that are repeated in Massachusetts, the cathedral cities and an actress named Elsa got me in the 92nd percentile. :)

Wow, Godmanchester makes the list? It's tiny! I've never heard of Lanchester and Portchester, though I did try Ribchester (Lancashire) and Muncaster (Cumbria - a seagull pooped on my head at the castle there...)

I'm an American, which would seemingly make this tough, but I'm from Virginia, so I've seen a lot of these names before. Great quiz!

Who else tried Podcaster? I thought there might be a "new town" with that name. :) Also, Roy of the Rovers is disappointed that Melchester isn't a bonus!

To fulfill the premise, should the quiz include -xeter places? They're derived from the same root too.

Does anyone else find the name Godmanchester really funny? Also I'm suprised that only 25% of people got Colchester. I'd have thought that would be top 5 at least.

Grantchester definitely needs to be added, for a small village it's relatively famous thanks to the poem!

Yes, I'll second Kitimat88, Grantchester has international fame thanks to the Pink Floyd song. Apparently it has the world's highest concentration of Nobel Prize winners... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grantchester
