| Well said Pit_trout, foreign aid is not charity nor should it necessarily be. For example, we pay egypt and jordan so much not because of any dire emergency there but as a thank you for not attacking Israel anymore (aka its a bribe). We pay Russia and ukraine a lot to assist in securing loosely guarded former soviet nuclear sites so nukes dont fall in the wrong hands. Pakistan, Kenya, Indonesia, etc get lots of money for help (more like "help" in some cases) on counterterrorism.
Europe on the other hand doles out large sums to African and Asian governments for purely humanitarian purposes with no strings attached. Most of it ends up back in Europe--in African dictators' personal Swiss bank accounts. |
