Agreed, I haven't been to very many states but I've been to DC and that should count!

I've sadly only been to two other states other than the one I live in. The thing is that I live in AZ, and Las Vegas and San Diego are only a few hours away, and Los Angeles isn't much farther, so when it comes time to take a vacation, we always go one of those places. So, I've been to CA and NV a million times, but nowhere else. I've been saying for the past couple years that I really want to go somewhere I've never been, but CA and NV are such good states to travel to. I'm actually going to L.A. in a couple days, and to Vegas in February. So, I'm not adding states to my list very well.

Gotta say, Alaska remains the most naturally beautiful place I've ever seen in my life. If you ever get the chance, don't hesitate to go (in summer, of course!)

This quiz is making me acutely aware of all the traveling I wish I could do! I've only been to 17 states - that leaves a lot of unexplored territory. Interesting quiz concept.

i'm from alabama, and a lot of people here haven't even left the state. my family likes to road trip a lot (we live all over the country), so i've been to 26 states myself, mostly by car.

I'm from the UK so have only visited New York (stayed a few days in NYC), Ohio (worked at Cedar Point) and Illinois (stayed a few days in Chicago). My flight also landed in New Jersey and I had a bus journey through Pennsylvania.

More people have been to Virginia than California? I find that surprising.

@ micah: The West Coast people and people in Asia will take any quiz a few hours later than east coast US people, so that might skew the results. Also, anyone who goes to D.C. likely goes to Virginia, and D.C. is a quite popular destination for Americans and non-Americans alike. Also, which population is logging on to Sporcle and looking for user-contributed quizzes? On the east coast, they're freezing so they're staying inside and playing Sporcle; on the West Coast, they're probably doing some fun outdoor activity. Besides which, Virginia is largely surrounded by other US states, with people crossing it on 95 to get other places. Who crosses California to get to another place? I know it happens, but with what comparative frequency?

Layovers don't count, do they? I assume Georgia would be #1 if so.

Good quiz idea, if people are answering honestly. I almost forgot to include my home state, wonder how many others did the same?

half of mine were layovers. also, Eliot, i live on the West Coast. in washington state, near seattle. Where it rains all year round and is dark and nasty. So people up here have nothing good to do, like the east coast people....

I wasn't counting states we drive through to get to others. Were we supposed to? If we were i'd have like 4 or 5 more...

the fact that more people answered that they've been to virginia then california might just show that more people on the east coast are on sporcle than the west coast. it doesn't have to be much more people, but its just an interesting question this quiz might have answered.

Puerto Rico and DC should be bonus answers. It hurts that I've only been to Texas and Florida east of the Rockies, but have seen all of the 13 western states besides Utah. If you plan it right, you can see 12 states and DC by driving from Virginia to Maine, and only see 3 driving cross country north to south from Seattle to San Diego.

I'm from Canada and been to 11 states: FL, IL, MI, MN, MT, NJ, NY, ND, PA, SD and WY. 4 of those were 18 years ago, the others (including layovers in Chicago/Minneapolis/Detroit) were all in the past 13 months.
