	Just wondering... why the distinction between "formerly independent" and "became state directly upon annexation?" They are the same thing, no? California was the "California Republic" or "Bear Flag Republic" for a short time. It, along with Vermont, Texas and Hawai'i, are the only 4 US states to have been--in some form (admittedly not recognized much internationally)--independent countries.

	It is a fine line. The difference is that unlike Texas or Vermont, California's "independence" lasted barely a month before the US Army occupied it. It formally moved from Mexican sovereignty directly to US statehood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_that_were_never_U.S._territories Hawaii would be in the "formerly independent" category if it did not become a territory for 60 years after annexation.
