If you're going to have Byrnes and Blalock, might as well put Griffey on here. Tampa released Blalock back in July.

@jaysee I was going to disagree, but then I thought of Jermaine Dye, who is also a free agent but never indicated retirement. There needs to be some consistency. I think only players who are currently members of an organization (including minor leagues) should be included. So, Griffey should be out.

I got everyone with 144 or more HR, but couldn't for the life of me figure out a Padre with 261 HR, especially after Tejada had come up elsewhere. Then I saw the answer and was like, "Ohhh...that's why I didn't get it."

Byrnes is retired now. He's playing in a softball league.

This sounds absurd, but Edgar Renteria and Johnny Damon each has a solid shot at 3,000 hits - and a HOF induction

i really hope andruw jones doesnt get 500 homeruns that would just be the ultimate blow to the honor

Johnny Damon being a possible HOF'er is not absurd at all.

Well I don't agree with Damon, he'll at least be discussed before falling short...unlike Renteria, who will not be discussed. And I agree with some of the above comments that free agents shouldn't count. Dye was the first guy I thought of when I saw Blalock and Byrnes included.

I don't understand why so many of these sports quizzes are Top 100's. When guys like Ronnie Belliard and Randy Winn make a HR Leaders list, you know there are too many answers. There are only about 400 batters on active MLB rosters. If you add in all the others who would be eligible given your rules, there wouldn't be that many more. So we are naming about a quarter of all MLB hitters. I think top 25 or 50 would have been sufficient, and much easier to keep up-to-date, as well.

Fair point puckett, but I feel like a lot of people enjoy these quizzes where you're forced to really reach back for names that don't come to mind right away. I'd rather do this than rattle off all the Rodriguezes, Ortizes, and Ramirezes in 2 and a half minutes and be done.

@LordLombardi I understand, and maybe a Top 25 would be too small, but you'd have to really start thinking hard with a Top 50. A Top 100 gets into the realm of ridiculous when a guy like Belliard who averages 13 HR per 162 games makes the list.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Good point on Dye and I don't know why baseball reference didn't include him since they have Jay Payton who hasn't played since 2008 listed.

Andruw Jones has never been an excellent all-around hitter, but if you combine his excellent fielding with his home runs, he MIGHT have a shot at Cooperstown.

I'm a big fan of this quiz. Completely disagree with 100 being too many. This quiz was only fun BECAUSE there were 100 names. 89/100 on first try =) Somehow missed Bay and Phillips :-

@BiloxiSean I think Andruw Jones deserves to be in the Hall. If Ozzie Smith is a Hall of Famer being an excellent defensive shortstop and nothing special as a hitter, I think Jones being the best defensive outfielder in the game for a decade straight and hitting over 400 homeruns should get him in. No PED accusations as well is a plus.

@deej: While he certainly has a 'shot' at it, I severely doubt that Edgar Renteria will get 3,000 hits. If he plays until he's 40, he'll need 127 hits a year for the next six seasons. He hasn't had more than 136 hits in a season since 2007 and his playing time will surely decrease with age.

Great quiz. Just reminds me of how bad the pirates are: 8 Former Pirates (Aramis Ramirez, Matt Stairs, Jose Guillen, Jason Bay, Adam LaRoche, Ty Wiggington, Eric Hinkse, Gary Matthews Jr.) as compared to the Current Pirates - ...
