	I definitely second the "causes of death" category. That's what I assumed the quiz would be before I clicked it, ha. I just got over my snake-bite and now I have dysentary! Dammit!

	This game ruled. I loved shooting everything that moved despite the fact that only 100 (?) pounds could be brought back to the wagon. Besides, who could ever hate a game where there is a good chance you could die from diarrhea?

	I never played the first one but I remember playing the second one (I think it is very similar but with more professions and more colorful pictures). I also find it interesting how Cholera causes diarrhea and diarrhea also has its own spot.

	You can buy wagon yokes at the store as well. I remember playing this in elementary school computer class instead of doing work. A truly great sporcle quiz.

	Well, I can't check this at the moment, but I used to have the high score on thaat virtualapple site. Real trail guides start as a farmer and get everyone to Oregon in good health with 2000 pounds of food, minus whatever you snack on as you're floating down the river. That'll get you 8000 points, although I admit the game gets a little silly when you work to maximize your score (it wouldn't have been a good call in real life to delay arriving in the Willamette by a month just to go bear hunting). I loved that game--so many good memories.

	Does "wandering off" not count as a way to die? I guess it's not guaranteed you'll die, but it was a way to lose a wagon passenger for good.

	Is diarrhea really listed as a separate way to die in the game? Because cholera and dysentery are both types of diarrhea, so that seams a little strange to have it separate as well.

	@Lindsay: I can't speak for the game but, medically, diarrhoea, cholera and dysentery are distinct. Diarrhoea is a symptom; cholera is a bacterial disease, one of whose symptoms is diarrhoea; and dysentery is a parasitic intestinal disorder which has diarrhoea as a symptom. For the record, I'm not sure I've ever written diarrhoea so many times in such a short space.

	either way, diarrhea is fun to write or hear that you died from.. haha and i dont want to hear anyone say their father died from diarrhea and get all offended cause everyone has to die somehow and i wont feel bad

	So `Oregon Trail' is a computer game that every American of a certain age played while at school? If so, the British cultural equivalent would be `Granny's Garden', though that was more of a puzzle game. It turns out that `Granny's Garden' has been rewritten for Windows and MacOS, which means that it's not freely available on the internet for everyone to try. I've now played a couple of games of `Oregon Trail' so thank you, Sporcle, for allowing me to relive somebody else's childhood! :-)

	@davidr: I know they're distinct (I'm a medical student - trust me, I know more than I've ever wanted to know about diarrhea), but I was just surprised to see diarrhea also listed separately, since it's usually the diarrhea component of cholera/dysentery that kills people. Saying someone died of cholera means they died of fluid loss from diarrhea, so having diarrhea listed on its own seemed a little odd to me. Just thought it was surprising that diarrhea was essentially the cause of death in 3 of the 9 items on the list.

	@Laly - No one ever said cholera is extinct (we said distinct, not extinct, big difference). Cholera is far from extinct and is a serious worldwide problem (especially in Africa, as you mentioned).

	I'd just like to say that this quiz is invaluable simply for the number of times "diarrhea" has appeared in the comments discussing it. Anytime you can get people to have lengthy conversations about diarrhea, you've done a good thing. Also, I used to play Oregon Trail on the Apple IIe computers at my elementary school. I don't recall those computers ever being used for anything else.

	apple iic here, great memories.... although i couldve sworn that one of the animals i was shooting was an otter or a beaver? i remember feeling so accomplished whenever i shot a rabbit, cus those suckers were next to impossible to nail... and then getting a mere 7 lbs of meat compared to a goliath easiest-target-ever buffalo.

	I think you can die of starvation if you run out of food. It's been a while though, so I'm not sure.

	Just for giggles, I loaded up a wagon with zero pounds of food and just started "waiting" for nine days at a go to see what happens. You never actually die of starvation--lack of food just lowers your general health, and that makes you succeptible to the various diseases. The members of you party will all eventually catch something and die from it--a fever, cholera, whatever. One point--"measels" is a disease in Oregon Trail that you can die from, but that doesn't make the list in this quiz yet.

	@ckbryant: Measles is actually already on the list. Fever is not, although I can't remember if you can die from that or not. And to follow up on my earlier comments - after playing a few times (and remembering all the times I used to play as a kid), I'm fairly sure that "diarrhea" was never a condition or cause of death in isolation outside of cholera/dysentery. I can't recall it ever saying "Johnny has diarrhea" etc during the course of the game.

	@ckbryant: I set off at a gruelling pace with only two oxen and managed to get 658 miles in 59 days before everyone died! I did have the Indians give me food three or four times and find wild fruit about the same number, though.

	With a crazy 18 oxen, I managed 900 miles in 39 days. But the main point of this post is to confirm that one can die of fever in the game.
