Very good quiz, knew there was a reason for being a British Empire stamp-collector in my (far distant) youth.

Wasn't Cambodia/Kampuchea known as the Khmer Republic as well? Don't know if the name was official, but I remember it in my school atlas in the 80's?

Belgian Congo should be an acceptable alternative to Zaire

Portuguese East Africa is the former name of Mozambibique. You could add that.

@bumfish, it specifies the year as 1997, which implies that you are supposed to enter the name immediately preceding the change.

@finnoztoffee: Yes, it was the Khmer Republic under Pol Pot's regime. Kampuchea was the later name following the Vietnamese occupation. I thought it best to include only the most recent name changes (otherwise you'd give away answers in the questions). I'm undecided on allowing earlier names such as Belgian Congo. You might then argue that Cambodia is an old name for Cambodia (pre-Pol Pot). @Kahlvin: There's quite a few former colonies that had fairly unimaginative names, mostly starting Portuguese-/Dutch-/British-/French- and I think the quiz is perhaps more fun without them. I've had another look through them and thrown in Suriname. The most recent renaming of a country is actually Yugoslavia but I left that out because Serbia and Montenegro is no longer a current country.

I miss Zaire. I hate having to type in DRC for each quiz. Also Upper Volta sadly missed.

According to wikipedia, Iraq was officially named that in 1920, not 1930. Also, Abyssinia became Ethiopia before 1975 (that was just when it became a republic); certainly it was officially Ethiopia in 1950 when it federated with Eritrea, and it was in use before then, but I can't seem to find an exact date.

The year of the name change for Ethiopia does seem a bit unclear from the sources I have. A book I have seems to apply to name post-war. I think I'll change it to 1941 but allow Italian East Africa as an alternate answer.

Taiwan please, it used to be called Formosa, until after WWII.
