| @Maciex: Hongkong and Hong Kong are already both accepted. In fact, it's impossible for just one of them to be accepted since Sporcle strips out white space (and other punctuation) when matching your input to the answer. As for Lisboa I don't think it should be accepted. If we accept Lisboa for Lisbon, why would we not also accept Munchen for Munich, and Praha for Prague, etc. In other words, it opens a gigantic can of worms, that I, as a quizmaker myself, would like to keep on the shelf unopened. As this quiz appears to be in English it seems justifiable that the common English names should be displayed and accepted. Of course, as it's his quiz, oldkent can do as he sees fit. There's a legitimate argument to be made that the correct name to use is the local name in the local language, but that battle was lost long ago, that's simply not how things are in the world. I believe most languages in the world have their own versions of foreign place names. To be pedantic about it the capital of China isn't Beijing and the capital of Thailand isn't Bangkok. But 北京 and 北京 aren't likely to appear in these quizzes. Also, it's problematic to transcribe the actual local name into English in a consistent way. For example, for Mandarin should you use Pinyin, or Wade-Giles? I think that's a path down which we should not tread. |
