The Florida Panther is an endangered animal and is the state animal of Florida. So I don't see how it fits here.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 04:00 GMT
The Dodgers are named after dodging streetcars I believe. The Jaguars are named after the jaguar that's prevalent in Florida. The Browns should be on this list, they're named after a coach. I'm sure there will be many more discrepancies. This quiz does not work, sorry.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 04:18 GMT
This quiz doesn't work, there are many, many names that are irrelevant that you left off. The San Francisco Giants are here, but not the New York Giants? Doesn't make sense.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 04:21 GMT
Lakers moved from Minneapolis (land of 10,000 lakes=Minnesota), Colts moved from Baltimore where there is a horse racing tradition, the dodgers moved from brooklyn (where they got their nickname from fans dodging trolley cars)... What about the Washington Wizards, Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals, Calgary Flames, Nashville Predators, Red Sox, or White Sox??? Please explain if the teams I listed shouldn't be on there... otherwise, please add them.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 04:23 GMT
The Dodgers were named after streetcars in Brooklyn, their original location, nothing to do with LA. Browns should be on here too though.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 04:52 GMT
The Royals are named for the royal horse show or something that occurs in Kansas City.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 04:56 GMT
The Red Wings were actually named after a team from Canada when a new owner took over he renamed them from the Cougars to the Red Wings to pay homage to his hometown team.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 05:03 GMT
What about the Philadelphia Eagles? Eagles are just a generic sports name that about 1 in 10 teams use (college and pro). There isnt an overwhelming population of eagles inside of Philadelphia.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 05:09 GMT
I fail to see how Penguins or Pirates have anything to do with Pittsburgh...
Jan 31st, 2010 at 05:13 GMT
Yeah. Kansas Citians voted on the name for the city's baseball franchise and decided on the Royals, named after the American Royal. Which, like fusillirob1983 said, is a livestock show, horse show, and rodeo that takes place annually. So the name is relevant. It's obvious you didn't do your research.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 05:18 GMT
Washington Wizards is the most obvious one you are missing...... Also, one of the stupidest names also
Jan 31st, 2010 at 05:30 GMT
And the Bears are NOT irrelevant. They were named after the cubs, except they wanted to give the impression of being more formidable than the baseball team in the city. Hence, Bears vs. Cubs. Putting cubs there would make sense, though. Not sure of the history of that name.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 05:36 GMT
Sorry this just doesn't work unless you are very clear about what you mean by names being "irrelevant to their city" and you are strict about it when you put together the list. As it is, the game is nothing more than just guessing from the 4 sports leagues to see what you might have decided to include.

We all know that Calgary is filled with flames all over the place you know. There are so many flames that they can hardly maintain an arena for the hockey team. lol
Jan 31st, 2010 at 06:53 GMT
im pretty sure someone already made this quiz and it was horrible, this one manages to be just as bad
Jan 31st, 2010 at 08:35 GMT
whats the criteria here
Jan 31st, 2010 at 08:42 GMT
@Gjezman, the Eagles are in Philly because of the Continental Congress and the framing of the Constitution. Since the Eagle is a symbol of patriotism, it fits for Philadelphia
Jan 31st, 2010 at 10:47 GMT
There are no jaguars native to Florida. Panthers yes, jaguars no.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 12:15 GMT
this quiz is absolutely awful
Jan 31st, 2010 at 13:46 GMT
What an irrelevent (sic) quiz
Jan 31st, 2010 at 14:23 GMT
FAIL! These are arbitrary at best. With the exception of some obvious cases of a team moving and retaining its old name, some names seem to fit less than others. e.g. The New Orleans Jazz moved to Utah - obviously irrelevant. Others simply have names assigned to make them sound fierce. There is no standard here.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 14:45 GMT
what an opinion-based quiz
Jan 31st, 2010 at 14:49 GMT
this quiz is bogus. gerard depardieu style.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 15:25 GMT
the chicago blackhawks were named after the original owner's world war i unit, whose nickname was the blackhawk squadron, in turn named after a native american chief, chief blackhawk (hence the indian head on the hawks sweater). while certainly a badass story, generally irrelevant to the city of chicago. many of you others answers/omissions are off base, and to boot, this quiz was done before i believe, with most people having the exact same complaints. in other words, fail
Jan 31st, 2010 at 15:53 GMT
Notably, the city of Pittsburgh features neither pirates nor penguins! Steelers, however, are present.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 16:03 GMT
So what if the name isn't relevant to the city? Can you not have a team name that isn't present anymore like the Raptors? Terrible quiz.

How is it that 400 people have taken this godawful quiz, when almost none of my quizzes- into which I put considerable amounts of time, effort, and thought- are lucky to ever get that many? (I know I'm not the only person who works their butt off on quizzes that will only be played 100 times, but as I'm not afraid to be vocal about it, I'm sure there are many others out there who agree with me.) If something is clearly a poor quiz, why support it?
Jan 31st, 2010 at 16:45 GMT
i don't understand how Chicago bears can be irrelevent but Chicago cubs isnt...
Jan 31st, 2010 at 16:46 GMT
This is not good
Jan 31st, 2010 at 17:20 GMT
What about the New Jersey Nets?
Jan 31st, 2010 at 17:23 GMT
the pirates were named so because they "stole players" from a local baseball team in the area and were said to be "pirating"....i didnt know there were panthers or jaguars in florida...eagles- america philly used to be the capital....predetors were named after a skeleton found in the city...penguins were named because they play in "the igloo"...totally screwed up on the chicago Cubs instead of the Bears and calgary flames(my bad-I will add them...KC royals didnt know about the show...NY Giants make sense because NY is the largest city and san francisco isnt...I wasnt sure about the Browns because they wear Brown but they arent a negro league team anymore so that was iffy...i will fix!!!
Jan 31st, 2010 at 17:26 GMT
@ercwtzl: there are nets in new jersey...this was a difficult quiz to make, I had to have some boundaries. It was in response to a "relevent team names" quiz, or something like that
Jan 31st, 2010 at 17:31 GMT
@Illini13: it was an opposite quiz, dont worry i will fix the minute errors, if u have any "ommissions" I can explain all of them
Jan 31st, 2010 at 17:40 GMT
I actually enjoyed this quiz and thought it was done pretty well. There are some notable omissions, but the quiz maker has offered to explain or add any team names that people feel should be listed. Calgary Flames is the first one I tried, which is irrelevant because the team was moved from Atlanta, where it got its name from the burning of the city during the US Civil War. I'm not sure what "Nets" are in this context, so an explanation would be nice. I'm also not sure if (or why) the names White Sox, Red Sox, and Wizards are relevant. Good job on the quiz, and I look forward to playing it again once it has bee tweaked a little.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 17:57 GMT
@sporcloid: thanx, the sox wear those color sox and the nets use nets...and obama is a wizard...lol jk, i added that one, but Obama does look like Spock
Jan 31st, 2010 at 17:58 GMT
Actually the Eagle for Philadelphia is not named after the symbol of America. The Eagle is named for the Blue Eagle, a symbol of the New Deal program during the Great Depression. So really it has nothing to do with Philadelphia specifically.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 18:05 GMT
@sox_fan1468927: i guess thats what happens when you assume... :(
Jan 31st, 2010 at 18:11 GMT
I've only been to Pittsburgh once, but all I can remember was how many penguins and pirates there were. The city was crawling with them!
Jan 31st, 2010 at 18:41 GMT
The criteria here seems extremely arbitrary. One has to wonder why the Detroit Tigers are included but the Cincinnati Bengals are not.
Jan 31st, 2010 at 18:48 GMT
@everybody: uh... Nets? Basketball? You shoot a basketball THROUGH A NET?? The only argument is it has nothing to do with New Jersey, but if a city has a basketball team, they can use a basketball type nickname. Come on.
