	Yep. I think the single most baffling thing is that they have the rhythm guitarist of Metallica (James Hetfield) on there but not the lead guitarist (Kirk Hammett).

	John McLaughlin is most knows for Mahavishnu Orchestra, so I would use that as his band name. Anyway, fairly boring list that's rather blues-heavy - would have been nice to see Marnie Stern, Nick Drake, John Renbourn and/or Bert Jansch (Pentangle), Bill Nelson, Robert Quine to name a few. Also, Richard Lloyd from Television was as good a guitarist as Verlaine but always gets stiffed for lists like this.

	Wow, they finally caved to the pressure and included RUSH in something! But yeah, these jokers wouldn't know what qualified as a great guitarist if their life depended on it. All you have to do is ask some actual players for their input. I mean, the metal omissions are glaring. Hetfield makes it but not Hammett? No Frehley, Satriani, Schenker or Tipton/Downing, Murray/Smith? And where on earth is Steve Howe or even the underrated Greg Lake?

	Rolling Stone list quiz. Always hard because you have to figure in how stupid Rolling Stone lists are. Let's ignore guys who can shred like Vai or Satriani or Malmsteen and throw in "iconic" rock stars who are serviceable players but certainly not "great" guitarists, like Springsteen and Cobain. And then there is always RS complete deification of "pioneers" who were really not especially impressive musicians. I'm looking at you, Bo Diddley.

	It's always to easy to find great guitarists ignored in these lists, some people have named Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, Eric Johnson, Howe, I could add Steve Morse or the Argentinians Skay (from Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota) and the late Pappo (considered a great guitarist by a certain BB King who played with him) to the ones already mentioned. What I do wonder is what Paul Simon, or the guitarists from the Ramones or the Sex Pistols are doing in the list. I like punk rock but the Ramones themselves have admitted not being good musicians.

	snu88les, Robert Johnson is #71, way too low in my opinion. pablitomiguez, I think the big problem is that Rolling Stone did not define the criteria for the list. They seem to be going by importance and influence as opposed to technical prowess. Hence why names like Simon and Springsteen made the list and why Johnny Ramone is in the Top 30. I'd argue that Ramone's influence does merit a spot on a top 100 list, but a very low ranking spot.

	More annoying than some of the omissions is the fact that Rolling Stone does this list over and over and over. It's always Hendrix at the top. Why do they need to rehash it?

	Seeing as Jack White is the only recent guitarist to make this list, 1. there is no merit to arbitrarily redoing the list every few years past enticing idiots to read your terrible publication 2. Seeing as no one's risen to take his spot, why did D Boon get cut from the list?

	It seems like a lot of people are having trouble with the solo acts, so are there any other bands/acts I can list for the ones whose band is simply listed as "solo"? For example, at first few people were getting Buddy Holly, but then I put "and the Crickets" and now more are getting him.

	Yes, it is obvious that Rolling Stone merits influence and pioneering over skill and that's why Cobain and Ramone are one the list. Just think of how horribly different rock would be without them though. That's why they're there. Also, Paul Simon is a brilliant guitarist, I don't see how you can call him untalented at all.

	lets hash this in a nutshell, cut some add some key indiveiduals who made guitar in the early days. add a bunch of names who play decent guitar. ignore shredders and metal guitarists, although to spice up the reactions put james hetfield and take off hammett. i read the article it was various source of opinions ranging form some of these folk to their fellow musicsions and finally rolling stones gallery of fools

	What the heck is this list based off of? It can't possibly be skill, otherwise Slash would be higher, we'd see more metal and prog (Petrucci and Syn, anybody?) and we'd see a lot of the v-generation (I think that's what they were called, don't quote me on it) guitarists, like Eric Johnson, Satriani, Vai, and Malmsteem (sp?). To repeat what all the others are saying, this list is a total joke.

	Paul Simon is a perfectly adequate guitarist. But I don't see how he possibly belongs on a list of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Is there anyone who decides to learn how to play the guitar because they're inspired by Paul Simon's guitar work?
