Why is Sweden accepted for Soviet Union, it was never a part of it.

I presume because some people might consider Soviet Union as USSR (and thus filed under U) as opposed to under S?

The only one I missed was Yugoslavia! In the beginning I went through the usual suspects (J, H, Q, O, Y and V) and just thought that there must be a problem with the quiz.

@sabresfan - I discounted the Soviet Union because I thought of it as the USSR. I would accept the second place answer in parenthesis or something like that. What do most sporcle geography quizzes classify it as, Soviet Union or USSR?

@barnztormre: had similar problems for a minute or two, was wracking my brain why it would not accept Germany.

I don't expect many of Bulgaria's or Norway's medals were at the Summer Olympics.

Any chance Qatar purposely made themselves the only country beginning with Q to make it to more Sporcle quizzes like this one?

@ChileNoseJam: Almost all Bulgaria's medals are at the summer games (212 of 218). The are particularly strong in Wrestling and Weightlifting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgaria_at_the_Olympics

If I ever get to start a country, I think I will call it Xenophobia. That way, perhaps in the far-off future, being a Xenophobe will finally have a positive context...

honest question. Does Great Britain, Scotland and Wales compete seperately or do they all compete as the United Kingdom? Also shouldn't East and West Germany just be Germany?
Lovenkrands
:

Soviet Union? Or does that go as USSR? @ssab: England, Scotland and Wales make up Great Britain. Add in Northern Ireland and that's the UK. But they compete in the Olympics as Great Britain. Suppose that would piss me off if I was from Northern Ireland. There was talk that they wouldn't field a soccer team in the Olympics because of the historical divisions between the four home nations. Germany competed as two separate nations from 1945 until unification.

Just looked this up. Northern Irish can compete for either Great Britain or Ireland, and in most sports the Irish team would be easier to make. And yes, the folks in Northern Ireland object to the name and want to compete as Team UK (per wikipedia).

England, Wales and Scotland are Great Britain. The island itself. The Isle of Man competes as Great Britain and the Northern Irish athletes have the option of competing as Irish or British at the Olympics and many other international sporting events as well. The name Great Britain continues to be used because of its historical use in the games.

Being from Northern Ireland, the team competes officially as 'Team Great Britain and Northern Ireland'. As we know, NI is part of UK but not Britain and they (NI) want to change the team name. People from NI can also compete for the Ireland team as well. Annoying because it's the only one I didn't get.

Yugoslavia is not a country. Yemen should be the answer. Also, why do you have West Germany and East Germany when they merged into the Germany we know today a long time ago?

The answer for 'S' should be Soviet Union. According to the source you used, the USSR competed as Soviet Union, which unfortunately means Sweden has to make way.

If Sporcling were an olympic event who would get the silver? I assume everyone agrees it is obvious that the United States would win gold by a landslide.

I can't believe Hungary has that many medals. I can't recall seeing any athletes compete from there. But I'm sure I'll see tons this year...now that I'll be looking for them.
