Note: in a break with Sporcle convention, YOU MUST ENTER A PLAYER'S FULL NAME, BOTH FIRST AND LAST. This is a feature and not a bug! Otherwise it would be too easy to type in "Smith" or "Johnson" and knock out a dozen answers at a time. Player names are as listed at baseball-reference.com. Statistics through 2010 season.
Feb 10th, 2011 at 15:06 GMT
Great quiz-- Almost every block had players I should have thought of. Still not sure how much I like the WAR stats as a major way of evaluating players.
Feb 10th, 2011 at 15:29 GMT
Absolutely unbelievable quiz. How long did it take you to make this?!
Feb 10th, 2011 at 18:41 GMT
Very enjoyable. The toughest part as you went through was figuring out who was gone that you hadn't typed in.
Feb 10th, 2011 at 19:42 GMT
I should have been thinking pitcher-heavy, but I didn't. Just naming Cy Young winners would have gotten me a bunch I missed.
Feb 10th, 2011 at 19:49 GMT
Awesome quiz. Though you should accept Joe Jackson.
Feb 10th, 2011 at 22:17 GMT
Good quiz. Anyone else have a problem with response times on these long quizzes? When ever I do one of these big quizzes, it takes forever for the name being typed to appear in the box. Then if I made a typo because of the delay, it takes that much longer to correct.
Feb 10th, 2011 at 22:27 GMT
A couple notable actives that should be joining this list some time in the 2011 season: Ryan Howard, Adrian Gonzalez (I sure hope so at least), Paul Konerko, Alfonso Soriano, Ian Kinsler, Jason Bay, Orlando Hudson, and a few others. Great quiz, I enjoyed it.
Feb 10th, 2011 at 23:22 GMT
Nicely done... Nate Silver?
Feb 10th, 2011 at 23:39 GMT
One note: You should just accept "Joe Jackson" for Shoeless Joe.
Feb 10th, 2011 at 23:41 GMT
Also, I think you should just accept Ichiro. I mean, who else am I going to be guessing with that one?
Feb 10th, 2011 at 23:44 GMT
Feb 11th, 2011 at 02:11 GMT
Much like the similar movie quiz, bravo on the effort..I also would like to suggest people post the player they got that ranked the lowest here..I got Lloyd Moseby=945 and the highest group where I got nobody was 121-130 which included some HUGE names (facepalm)
Feb 11th, 2011 at 03:59 GMT
How the hell did casey blake get on this list?
Feb 11th, 2011 at 05:17 GMT
The lowest I got was Jose Reyes (981-990) and the highest group I missed was 291-300 (Rocky Colavito). Awesome quiz!
Feb 11th, 2011 at 05:53 GMT
Lowest I got was 994 Tom Henke...as I was running through random Blue Jays.

STUPID QUIZ!!! I am an avid baseball fan an this quiz fails. You says you have to enter the full name of the players because otherwise it would be too easy. Well guess what?! Then it just becomes a "can you spell the names of hard to spell Latino (and other nationalities) players quiz". I took French and I cannot. I don't know how many r's are in cabrerra. Who cares? Its hard enough to spell some of the player's last names correctly, let alone put a combination of possibilities of first names AND last names together. Second of all, its not like anybody who took this quiz can actually have time to scroll through what they have answered and what they haven't. The quiz is too long as it appears on the browser. Forget that; I just named (and apparently had to learn how to spell) random baseball player's I remember (91/100) by the way. This quiz is not good for the sporcle format. 1 star.
Feb 11th, 2011 at 08:08 GMT
thestorm80: So you complain about putting in first names, then complain about Hispanic last names? What Hispanic FIRST name are you having trouble spelling here?
Feb 11th, 2011 at 12:54 GMT
Chuck Knoblauch and Brad Radke higher than Don Mattingly.
Feb 11th, 2011 at 17:00 GMT
I missed 211-220, I can never remember Mariano rivera for some reason and didn't think of Cash, even though the 1960s Tigers crossed my mind. Lowest get was 971-980, thanks to Richie Zisk being a famous Z player. Worst misses were Strawberry's group (did try Gooden), George Foster (my name is George) and David Justice (big Braves fan).
Feb 11th, 2011 at 18:37 GMT
@Etheridge2: I guessed Mike Sweeney (1000!) I think he's ranked too low, though. He's easily top-990.
Feb 11th, 2011 at 20:32 GMT
Highest miss was 401-410, lowest get was 991-1000. I loved the quiz.
Feb 15th, 2011 at 02:11 GMT
should accept Jim Hunter or James Hunter for Catfish Hunter
Feb 15th, 2011 at 17:43 GMT
My lowest get was 997, Jason Varitek. My highest miss was 221-230.
Feb 16th, 2011 at 08:41 GMT
Lowest I got was #990, Tommie Agee. That group also has Jose Reyes, so it should rate highly with Mets fans. Highest I missed was #491-500, so close to being perfect in the top 500. Names I could have guessed in that group were Pie Traynor, Harold Baines, Magglio Ordonez, and Mark Teixeira. Ones I was most frustrated at missing include Dusty Baker and Mike Scioscia, because I was actively trying to think of current managers who were also players. I was also pissed that I missed Terry Steinbach, Mike Scioscia, Mike Greenwell, and Kevin Mitchell, because I actually went through many players from the '88 A's, '88 Dodgers, '88 Red Sox, and '89 Giants, and skipped over all four of them.
Feb 16th, 2011 at 08:44 GMT
Here's another fun game: what player on this quiz that you've either never heard of, or know virtually nothing about, has the coolest name? My pick: #911 High Pockets Kelly. 1st runner-up: #561 Lu Blue.
Feb 17th, 2011 at 02:27 GMT
This was a mission of patience, something I do not have...kudos nrsilver for your terrific quiz...one quiz I will try again.
Apr 27th, 2011 at 13:46 GMT
Great game, but I think this proves that WAR isn't as accurate as some would lead you to believe. Anyone who says Sandy Koufax wasn't one of the 250 best baseball players of all time is out of his or her mind.

May 12th, 2011 at 00:30 GMT
I agree that thi ranking system sucks! Sandy Koufax is in the same bracket as Brian Downing! Yup, that is accurate!
Jun 6th, 2011 at 20:37 GMT
i think the lowest one i got was kent tekulve, but my answers were gone by the time i read these comments. i was amazed at how high scott rolen was here. well above many hall of famers. looking at mike schmidt up there at 19 with the immortals in that group...i watched him hundreds of times for 15 years and dozens of times in person...it gives me chills.

Rick Reuschel 110 best player......uh, no.

How is Gene Tenace 90 places higher than Thurman Munson???????

Dec 10th, 2011 at 20:09 GMT
Barry Bonds as high as #2 and Ted Williams as low as #14 just shows what a flawed stat WAR is.
Dec 10th, 2011 at 23:29 GMT
@MFHBoiler: because Munson wasn't mentioned in Anchorman.. WHAMMY!
Dec 11th, 2011 at 01:33 GMT
It's not actually the top 1000 since you only have to name 100 players to finish the quiz.
Dec 11th, 2011 at 03:09 GMT
Really, a big chunk of what it shows is that Ted missed 5-6+ seasons fighting wars. Sandy Koufax is an even bigger example; he is 286th all-time in innings pitched. Is it really that surprising he struggles with a career based statistic?
Dec 30th, 2011 at 18:19 GMT
Lowest get: 945 Willie Horton Highest miss: 221-230
Jan 1st, 2012 at 07:26 GMT
love being able to enter some of my favorite 80s & 90s baseball card pack fillers like sixto lezcano, kent , bill doran and kevin seitzer (among others). My lowest surprised me...Jose Reyes at 988. One spot lower than Richie Zisk & Chris Bosio. EXCELLENT!!
