| Oh, awesnap and cocky: TR won in 1904 and came in second in 1912 ahead of Taft and behind Wilson. TR decided, after 7 1/2 years in office, that he would respect Washington's 2-term precedent in spirit as well as letter. (Or so says Theodore Rex). The commonly-given account is that TR was so greatly disappointed by the performance in office of his protégé, Wm Howard Taft, that he felt impelled to challenge him first at the Republican Convention of 1912, and then as a third-party candidate. After 1912, TR lost interest in the Progressive Party and it petered out by about 1916. |
