| luke78, steroids don't just give guys homerun power. They do a number of things, and even the increased power has a ton of effects which you might not think of - including what the pitcher throws, which turns into inflated OBP and occasionally more pitches to hit, etc. It really just changes everything. I watched Sammy Sosa for over a decade, he had horrible plate discipline, yet all of a sudden with the power came an increase in average and OBP, much than could be accounted for by the increased homers. Why? It's all interconnected, you can't change one thing that much without affecting everything.
Also, though, the ball WAS juiced, like in the 30s. But I think steroids were at least half responsible for the gaudy RBI totals. But we just need to remember that steroids don't just effect power and nothing else - even if that were true, the power would change every other at-bat. |
