Excellent quiz, ninni21! In my circle, these kinds of words are known as "Janus words", after the two-faced (front and back) Roman god Janus, whose name also gives us January. Here are a few others: (1) Dispense means "get rid of" when used with "with" as in, "Let's dispense with the sarcasm," but it also means "give out" as in "dispensing justice" or "dispensing medicine". (2) Fair means "ordinary, unremarkable" as in, "The acting in that movie was only fair," but it also means "beautiful, remarkable" as in "a fair maiden" or "fair weather". (3) Fast means "moving at high speed" as in, "The sprinter ran very fast," but it also means "firmly fixed" as in, "The helmsman held fast to the ship's wheel during the violent storm." (4) Stem, as a verb, can mean "to arise from, to flow from" as in, "All his good fortune stems from that one good deed," but it can also mean "to stop, check, or restrain" as in, "He used a tourniquet to stem the flow of blood." OK, that's enough for now. Again, excellent quiz! |
