I wonder, is it more of a US thing to give surnames as first names? I'm pretty sure that last names such as Bryson, Carson and Jackson are much, much rarer as first names in the UK. Anyway, good quiz idea.

Yes, I think it's more common in the US. It started as a tradition in the South of giving children family surnames as first names and spread from there. Unfortunately the practice loses some of its meaning if the surnames don't have family significance.
