Great idea for a quiz. I can't believe I didn't get Lily, Jasmine or Heather! I was surprised that Dahlia isn't on there, or Poppy.

A couple others that probably missed the cut by a little are Laurel and Daphne. This was probably my favorite "baby names" quiz because it actually required some thought. Well done!

Good quiz. Thought I had a pattern established, but Parsley, Sage, and Thyme didn't make the cut.

Good idea. Wonder if Jasmine has climbed the ranks due to Disney's "Aladdin" and Lily has jumped up because of Lily Potter.
| nightfloat: | Aug 25th, 2011 at 10:02 GMT | | 1 point |
@Triffid: I think the main name for hawthorn is hawthorn and may is an alternate (Wikipedia lists it this way also, which is how I made some of the other determinations). I'll add it as a bonus, though!

To those of you mentioning plants/gems that really are used as names: if it's not here, it wasn't popular enough to ever be one of the 5 most used in a given year.

I'm surprised people use Ginger as an official name, when it's a common (and not always positively intended) nickname for someone with red/orange hair. Unless that's just in Britain? Over here, calling a child 'Ginger' would be as odd as calling it 'Blue Eyes' or 'Brunette'.
| nightfloat: | Sep 3rd, 2011 at 12:18 GMT | | 10 points |
Ginger is a British term that was only recently introduced to the US via South Park. In the US the usual term is redhead. :)

The only thing I don't get is why combine gems with plants? Why not just the top 5 plant/female names for each year? Is it just that there wouldn't be enough variety in the answers because it would be the same 5 answers every year? If that's the case then I get it but otherwise it seems sort of random to combine gems and plants.

@LettucePray...on the one hand, right on. On the other hand, Ginger Rogers was a stage name. Her real name was Virginia Katherine McMath (assuming Wikipedia can be trusted). Maybe Ginger Lynn would have been a better example. Less famous (though much more famous to a certain segment of the public) but Ginger is apparently her actual name.
