	I know this is kind of outdated since its from 2000, but the 2010 census didnt ask about ancestry. in a perfect world i would have been able to find ancestry data from another past census and done a comparison with 2000, but that type of information is hard to come by

	I'm thinking that people who said they were Spanish are of the same origin as those who said they were Hispanic. Just like those who said they were American were most likely of English origin.

	@chriskotx-you're right about hispanic and spanish ancestry, my original source clumped them into one group, but i found a printed version of the same map where hispanic and spanish were mapped separately-thats why hispanic is an alternative answer for spanish and vice versa. but people who report american ancestry tend to be irish or scottish in european descent, but probably some english too

	@publicenemy-well this is about ancestry, so i dont think thats too surprising. people who said they had american ancestry were mostly in the south and southern midwest, while every part of the country has people who identify with german ancestry

	Not so sure about this. I think that huge "American" category is misleading. Most of these people are probably of some mix of European ancestries, not Native American ancestry.

	@mattmag-the census bureau is the one who came up with all of these different ancestry classifications, so i cant just change american to something else. but I have now made irish, english, and scottish alternative answers for american, since those are the most common european ancestries of people who say they have american ancestry

	Glad to see the Finns represented! Keweenaw County really does have a lot of them; some of the signs in Houghton County just to the south are in both Finnish and English. Fun quiz, all in all.

	how can you possibly be American in ethnicity, if you're not Native American? i still don't get that. All white Americans came from some respect from Europe, all black Americans came from Africa from some extent, unless you're Native American, you cannot claim American as an ethnicity

	@roman-Who ever said anything about ethnicity, ancestry and ethnicity are not the same thing. I think white americans can claim american ancestry if their families have been in the united states for a certain number of generations. inevitably, more and more americans will say they have american ancestry as more generations go by and people feel less connection with their countries of origin, which is whats going on in the south, where most of the "american" ancestry is

	The South will tend to identify as American, while the North and West, which have had more recent immigration influxes, tends to recognize the various ancestries. It's a cultural difference. The South's major immigration waves (excepting the new Latin American one) is much less recent than in the North, which makes identification with the ancestries easier and more common. @cwpiper - I'd imagine Scottish or Scotch-Irish would be predominant in some of the South if American wasn't accepted.

	And beyond that, the Sun Belt has experienced much more co-mingling of groups. You don't see distinct ethnic neighborhoods in Sun Belt cities like you do in those of the North and Northeast, nor are there the distinct Chinatowns or Japantowns like you have on the West Coast. The result is that my son is pretty equal parts German, English, Scottish, Czech, Italian, Swiss, Dutch, French, and Luxembourgois--how would he possibly define his ancestry other than "American"?

	I find it odd that "American Indian" is a catch-all group when it represents so many different cultures. "African American" makes sense since most African Americans cannot trace their ancestry back to one particular country or ethnic group (due to both lack of records and mixing between the various African ethnic groups over time). Looking at the map, however, it is clear that American Indians represent many distinguishable groups (for example, Navajo in Navajo County, AZ; Lakota in Shannon County, SD; Cherokee in Cherokee County, OK; and Lumbee in Robeson County, NC).
