| It's self-identified, yes. However, having worked as a census enumerator and seen the attitudes that usually corresponded with the "American" answer, I can tell you that it had very little to do with an absence of connection to old-world ancestry. Those who answered "American," in my experience, found the question (and the census in general) irritating, and were stubborn and disagreeable. For whatever reason, that response was an expression of a general paranoia about the whole thing.
So while I don't have any beef with the fact that "American" appears on this quiz (self-identified stats are what they are), I have no patience for those who gave that response. In most cases (and again, in my experience), it was nothing but paranoid passive-aggression. |
