| While neither the Armenian Apostolic Church nor the Coptic Orthodox Church are Eastern Orthodox, the quiz is clearly named Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches, and thus they are rightly included in the quiz. The Oriental Orthodox Churches (which include the two in this quiz) rejected the Council of Chalcedon (451) proclaiming that Christ had two natures, Divine and Human. The Assyrian or Nestorian Churches rejected the Council of Ephesus (431) (led by Pope St. Cyril of Alexandria (actually the president of the Council was Mnemnon of Ephesus), defender of the Faith, Judge of the Universe) which proclaimed that Christ was one in Person...i.e. that he was God, and Mary was the bearer of God. (Nestorius taught that Jesus was the bearer of God, and said he could not call an infant God.) There is debate today as to whether the theologies were really different, or if the differences were merely terminological and political. For what it is worth, I do believe that the differences were real. One more tidbit, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church claims to possess the tabernacle of Indiana Jones fame (it also is known to some as having been described in the Bible). |
