Cool idea for a quiz. I'd like to see similar quizzes for other ancient empires.

In the title, it should say "were" not "where"

I typed in both "South Korea" and "Republic of Korea" and neither counted.

What about Jordan? If you include Syria, they were certainly in Jordan too. Could at least be a bonus answer like Israel and Lebanon.

The bonus for Jordan currently comes up when I type "Syria", but not for typing "Jordan" itself? Awesome quiz, though, and literally awe-inspiring to see how far the empire stretched!

Shucks I never quite realised how big the MOngol empire was. That's amazing.

Could probably use a little more time, maybe another minute. Also, when you type Syria, it gives you both Syria and the Jordan bonus. Good game.

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry at the fact that 3.6% of quiz takers so far missed Mongolia.

My history professor informed us that the Mongolian Empire was the largest contiguous empire the world has ever seen, a truly astonishing fact. Yet curricula in universities are so focused on European and North American history, it seldom gets a mention. Too bad.

You are missing Hungary, which included Dalmatia (most of which is in present day Croatia, but also parts of Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina) at the time of the Mongol occupation.

@kennyb but territorywise I do not think the Mongols reached the Dalmatian coast. I think that this quiz is about converting the actual territories the Mongols conquered to the modern day countries which know occupy them. Great quiz!

astonishing how far they got if you think of how little amount of people there are in mongolia now even if the country is kinda big. good quiz. surprised by how far they got into the west.

@kzav, the Mongols certainly attacked the Dalmatian coast, and had effective control of the Hungarian Plains until they withdrew from Hungary after Great Kahn Ögedei died. In fact, the early, decisive victory of the Mongols during the invasion of Hungary was at the Battle of Mohi, on April 11, 1241, which is IN present-day Hungary. This quiz is missing Hungary, period.

Did they actually just skirt around Bangladesh? Seems a little strange for it to be missing.

@gatz40, Part of the reason the Mongol empire only gets passing mentions is that there wasn't much to it. They covered a ton of ground, but were mostly concerned with raping, murdering, burning and pillaging. Other empires had complex cultures and governments. There's just not that much to say about the Mongols.

I'm not sure they ever conquered Bhutan and Nepal -- I thought the Tibetan kingdom managed to stay independent. Am I wrong?

@nearlyextinct: Are you still monitoring the comments of this quiz? There are still old comments (such as the Syria/Jordan ones) which have not been addressed. If you can ensure that all comment concerns above have been addressed, and will be monitoring this quiz for further new comments, I can consider it for an Editor's Pick. Thanks. -napb (History editor)
