| For my definition of "suburb" I'm going with the census definition. The name of the conurbation at the mouth of the Hudson is "New York-Newark-Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA CSA," while southern California is Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside, CA CSA." The census gives Newark equal standing with New York (there's an argument to be made that Newark is nothing but a hole, but that's another story).
