| I never knew that I knew the Hawaiian islands, but apparently I do. |

| Can ask how people missed the isle of Hawaii when the state is called that? |
 | bballerjp15: | Feb 6th, 2013 at 21:01 GMT | | 10 points |
| @jackmerlin
I missed it. Honolulu is on Oahu so i figured that was the main island, i just thought that Hawaii was the name given to the group of islands. Just cuz the state is named that don't mean there has to be one. There is no Fiji island in the country of Fiji |

| I thought I was so clever thinking "Niihau? They got a Chinese word and snuck it in? Not falling for that!" |
 | gameboyguy13: | Feb 9th, 2013 at 10:26 GMT | | 4 points |
| Only problem is that most of the islands' names include an ʻokina, e.g. Lānaʻi. In fact, Maui is the only island that doesn't have that letter. |

| Niihau. That's an island? I thought it was just a misspelling of hello in Chinese. Great quiz! |
 | TheFlyingBarney: | Mar 14th, 2013 at 18:57 GMT | | 16 points |
| Fun fact: the Hawaiian alphabet only has twelve letters - aehiklmnopuw |
 | Jaspers: | Mar 14th, 2013 at 19:53 GMT | | 19 points |
| @TheFlyingBarney: You could tell me 'Aehiklmnopuw' is the Hawaiian word for house or something, and I'd believe you. |

| I hate it when people say Hawaii is one of the eight main islands. That is like saying China is part of the U.S. |

| @scout_number_4 - Remember, the surfing is better on the island of Big Kahuna. Little Kahuna's waves are like a kiddie pool |

| @turqbob: I'm not positive, but I don't think your analogy makes sense here... Can you clarify your meaning? |

| @turqbob Hawaii is the real name of what is commonly called "the big island." Your analogy does not make sense. A more appropriate analogy is saying that Australia is a country in the continent of Australia (even though it is more commonly called Oceania) |

| Poor work on the decoys. All but one of them has the 'okina in an impossible position under Hawaiian phonology, and one of them has an impossible sound combination given that the 'okina is being used. This could be a fine quiz if it were constructed by someone with a rudimentary knowledge of the language. |

 | Hominid: | Mar 15th, 2013 at 20:35 GMT | | 8 points |
| @Phraxos: I would expect people with rudimentary knowledge of the Hawaiian language to also have rudimentary knowledge of Hawaiian geography, but I could be wrong. |

| I'm no Hawaiian language expert, but some of the decoys I chose were actually Hawaiian words. I did not add the punctuation marks to the decoy answers and the marks were added when the quiz got published (I think it was a good addition). Considering more people select a decoy answer than Kahoolawe, that doesn't seem to be a major problem. |

| Jaspers, I don't know about Aehiklmnopuw, but humuhumunukunukuapua'a is a fish. |
 | LICA98: | Mar 16th, 2013 at 05:35 GMT | | 0 points |
| Aehiklmnopuw can't be a Hawaiian word because it doesn't end in a vowel. |
 | ritorukibou: | Mar 16th, 2013 at 09:42 GMT | | 1 point |
| I feel like i cheated because I live here. You pronounce all the vowels so Ni'ihau does not actually sound like hello in mandarin. |
 | namepa: | Mar 16th, 2013 at 21:17 GMT | | 0 points |
| Hale is house |
 | Beefy: | Mar 19th, 2013 at 23:11 GMT | | 1 point |
| All vowels in Hawaiian are pronounced separately. Each of the 'i's in Ni'ihau are pronounced, so it sounds something like nee ee ha u, only said at a speaking pace. If you say it right, it doesn't sound that much like the Chinese word for 'hello.' |
