| It's curious that only New Zealand and Australia could be properly called "southern" countries, for which the Southern Cross in the flag is quite logical. Brazil is mainly in the southern hemisphere, but it straddles the Equator. Samoa is in the southern hemisphere but not too much (approx. 15ยบ S latitude). And Papua New Guinea is so close to the Equator that I think that the Southern Cross isn't the most appropriate symbol to include in the flag. (Of course the constellation can be seen from places as northern as Hong Kong, but normally one associates it with the southern hemisphere). |
