| Was interested in checking out how many of these guys won MVPs in that year. Most of the pitchers got denied: only Bucky Walters in 1939, Hal Newhouser in 1945 and Bob Gibson in 1968 won the MVP while also having the highest WAR. Of the position players, those denied were Ruth (1931), Gehrig (1934, 1935), DiMaggio (1937), Ott (1938), Ted Williams (1941, 1942, 1947), Stanky (1950), Jackie Robinson (1951, 1952), Mantle (1955), Mays (1958, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1964), Morgan (1973), Schmidt (1974), Brett (1979), Ripken (1984), Boggs (86, 87, 88), Clark (89), Bonds (96, 98), A-Rod (2000), Pujols (2003, 2006). Most of these guys won MVPs in other years, though. The exceptions are Ruth, Ott, Stanky, Boggs, and Clark. Boggs' case is particularly noteworthy, since he had the best WAR for three years running without winning. |
