In the event that you aren't, John Stafford Smith had nothing to do with the lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner which were penned by Francis Scott Key in his poem "The Defence of Fort McHenry" (they still had that British spelling thing going on back then... it was probably the attack of Fort McHenry that made them drop the C in favor of an S... yeah, take that Great Britain!!!)
In any case, Key was observing very real explosions and used the appropriate words (bombs, rockets) to describe them. While they aren't atomic bombs or space ships, he was still witnessing bombs and rockets.
@bmo1616 I'm in favor of scrapping the Star Spangled Banner and making "America the Beautiful" our national anthem instead. It's a much much easier song to sing than our current national anthem. |
