@ swellwrench: Because that's how the word is spelled. In general, root words in English only end in "er" is they are of Germanic origin. Latin, Greek, and French origins produce the "re" ending.

I don't think "Knickerbockers" should be a bonus answer. It's the team's real name; they're just called "Knicks" for short (and because, let's face it, Knickerbockers is a pretty ridiculous name ;)).
