Shows that Russia actually attracts immigrants from across Asia and Eastern Europe. Interesting.

@HiddenPalace: also, before 1991, a lot of this would have been essentially internal migration within the USSR...

For the stans and east slavic countries Russia is central to their world. It's the nearest source of better life and education. And they have particular post USSR relationships as well.

@Zephos Not exactly. During the Soviet times internal migration was quite opposite: Russia's population was forced (more or less softly) to move to the national republics and people from there were moving to Russia only for education (they didn't really settle much in Russian SFSR). Nowadays Central/Eastern Asian and Moldovan/Ukrainian migration are mostly cheap labour workers, and their numbers are times bigger (well, most of those immigrants are illegal, so the 2002 census doesn't really show the real image).

I am sure most of these "foreign born" are ethnic Russians, who moved to Russia rather than live as a minority in a newly foreign country. ie. Russian family living in Uzbek S.S.R., and has children there from 1920ish-1990, and suddenly decides that living in Russia is better than living in Uzbekistan, etc.

Interesting that a country as huge as the former USSR has such a homogenous population, unlike, say the USA. That's a pretty small foreign-born census, there. And yes, I know the reasons, but just noting.

All the other former Soviet republics (except for Estonia) were on the list. That took care of 13 of the answers right there.

I was reading about how there are places along the Chinese-Russian border where densely-populated settlement switches to empty Siberian wilderness without much transition. It seems so odd that China is so crowded with all that closed-off Russian land to the north of it.

There are traditionally strong ties between Russia and Vietnam, dating back to their communist pasts. I was surprised that Germany did not make it, given their economic ties. I had expected a relatively large number of German expats in Russian businesses.

I'm surprised that no other big Western countries are on the list besides USA. I figured at least the UK would be on there and maybe a few others.

Interesting quiz -Some 5,000 Russians in Ireland (earlier quiz) but we don't register in Russia although there maybe a few hundred . Strange or maybe not so that Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania are all missing with only Bulgaria . Must be the winters . Surprised that Germany, the UK and France don't register but then many business people can 'commute' for short periods into Russia. Who doesn't love Russian folk music has'nt a soul ;)

The fact that Kyrgyzstan isn't somewhere in the upper nineties at least just shows that people aren't paying attention. Seriously, even if the quiz were to name the world's top banana-producing countries, I'd be tempted to try Kyrgyzstan, just to be sure.

@Roman: Yes, I am aware. Several of these countries don't border Russia. My comment really meant that Turkey is (imo) a rather obvious answer, why didn't I guess it?
