"England" is not a sovereign state. The answer should be "United Kingdom," with England accepted as an alternate answers. Otherwise, it's unfair to ask us to guess "countries," as the only part of the world where England is formally referred to as a "country" is within the United Kingdom itself.

FIDE, who award the Grandmaster titles and produce these statistics, list England, Scotland and Wales as separate countries because they compete separately on the national stage. However, to avoid confusion I will add Scotland's six grandmasters to England's total to make a "UK" figure.

@Brobert2: Its not only referred to as a country in the UK. Other places refer to England as a country. What about sports such as football and rugby?

Great quiz - I'm a chess tutor and this was challenging. Interesting that the two least guessed atm are the Olympic champions the the runners-up, while the newly crowned European champions don't even make the cut.

Montenegro is listed seperately on the FIDE list so I would guess not. At first glance I can't find Kosovo on there though. Why do you ask? Peculiarly, with the 125th highest average rating, there seems to be a country called "FIDE"?!

It is interesting that the chess homeland (Persia/Iran) does not appear here.

Wow, no Azerbaijan. Apparently, having three players in the top 15 doesn't even guarantee 20 GMs in total.

Proud to be Serb, only 7 Million people and 5th in the world (at number of GM). Old Yugoslavia prolly was 2nd (just behind USSR) with 24 Million people.

also, admittingly different regions of the uk (like england and wales) have seperate sports teams (like soccer), they are still under one federal government and do not have the characteristics of a true country.

England is a member of FIDE (as are Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Guernsey etc) so the answer is correct. So they count as separate countries according to FIDE.
