First time I've ever made one of these, so please let me know the flaws in the logic and I will try my best to amend them asap.

Great! Love this... one little TINY thing, there is a point where you HAVE to fill in C5 in order to progress, and all you know is it starts with S and has four letters. It's a teeny bit semi-ambiguous since some quizzes on this site spell Yemen's capital Sana'a with four letters (only one A), and most (if not all) quizzes take it even after you just type "sana". So I dunno maybe use one of the unused spaces to narrow it down (just not B2 or E4 since those wouldn't be available).

Thanks for the tip - wasn't aware of the alternative spelling of Sana'a. Will sort it now.

Ouagadougou ends with a U.

I don't understand the first clue. It seems to imply to me that B1 has to start with a J and that's all we know, but Jakarta and Juba don't work. What am I missing?
Feb 2nd, 2013 at 00:03 GMT
@adidag0, if you think about it going clockwise, you might find within letters J, K, L... S, T, U, there are some capitals in the world that are the only ones beginning with certain letters... Hope that helps.

@mrsmith, after playing most of the other logic quizzes out on Sporcle, I expected the procedure to be quite familiar. But nope. You start with that first clue, I look at how many boxes that applies to, and I think my brain imploded from how smart that was. Which is a good thing. Brainf***s are a good thing. There's no flaws in the logic and it all worked perfectly for me. That being said, I found myself referencing a list of capitals quite a lot... just because you needed to look at the lengths of capital names, the particular letters within them, etc. It's like a logic puzzle that mixes together capital cities and word play, if that makes sense. That's fun too. And I think a majority of quizzes in the Capital subcategory are like that anyway because it's hard to draw connections between them outside name patterns. But I think this one works, and you should definitely work on another one if you get the time. One with a lot more geographical trivia. Like which capitals are southernmost in the world, highest in altitude, west of that other capital, or north, most populous, or even with some sort of 'journey' aspect of it, like you're traveling along borders to each capital. I don't know. Just some thoughts. I sort of think that the capital logic quiz officially now belongs to you, like it's patented, so I'm not going to do it or expect someone else to do it. Just some ideas if you ever wanted to do another one. :)

Not a criticism, just wanted to point these out. I know this is just because I read the clue in C1 wrong, but I wanted to point out that entering Santiago in B4 does not end the quiz. Also I miscounted, but the clue in D1 suggested Abuja in B3 which also did not end the quiz.

Thanks to everyone for the positive and useful feedback. I'll get working on a follow-up now!

the clue in d4 is useless because as soon as we type jerusalem in b1 we could get c1 because kathmandu is the only k capital ending in u
Feb 2nd, 2013 at 17:08 GMT
@prithvimothi, I'm not sure if we knew at that point that c1 had to be a city ending in u, that would only be clear once b4 is completed, which relies on c1. But similarly, I think the first half of the clue in d2 is redundant. Fun quiz anyway even if it did realistically require an excel sheet or similar

@tbh444: I didn't need B4 at all. By the time I got there, I had already deduced the information its clue. I think once you get B1, you got a lot of cities all at once, simply because you suddenly have to dump in 8 or so cities, and there's only room for them all if you put the ones that can go on the outside, in those spots.
Feb 2nd, 2013 at 20:01 GMT
@marpocky, but without B4 I don't see why kathmandu couldn't be in say C4, with kingstown being C1?

I love the way you just casually say " x is the only capital that can be made using 5 letters from y". I ran the clock out looking for Dhaka! In spite of that, I loved the variety of ways you used the capital names in your clues, and how you tied them in together (e.g. nine letter capital ending in U, alphabetically sorted). The logic was flawless, but not too convoluted. All in all, one of my favorite logic puzzles yet. Great job!

@tbh444, if you know that Kingstown is another possibility, you need something more to go on before you risk putting in anything in C1. The clue in D4, which you should reach eventually, helps you decide for sure what goes there - and it helps to point to Kathmandu.

Fantastic quiz, albeit insanely difficult. Massive kudos to anyone who can complete it without having a list of all the capitals to hand - I certainly needed one!

Just a couple of points that may just be me being dim...it wasn't clear to me how Maseru is placed, because the quiz didn't seem to make clear that all capitals ending in U must be involved, just that four of them are on the outside. Also, I took "the letters in B1 can be used to spell the city in B2" to mean that the two were anagrams, maybe it's just me but I didn't realise you meant that just a few of the letters from B1 were used. Logically this was a great quiz though :-)
Feb 4th, 2013 at 19:17 GMT
Sorry, ignore the 'u' thing, just the second point, I'd missed a clue!
Feb 6th, 2013 at 16:36 GMT
Very good, but a real shock to the system when the first clue isn't something simple like "B4 is the capital of Spain" So was I the only poor soul who worked out Kathmandu and Dhaka by the going through all the letters of Kingstown and seeing there was no possible 5 letter capital to be made.

First time Ive ever run out of time on a logic quiz. Im not sure if that makes me annoyed with this quiz...or in love with it.
Mar 22nd, 2013 at 23:33 GMT
For those who are wondering, and may be stuck, there are 10 capitals that end in 'u' in this quiz. Also, there is at least one other capital that can be made using the letters from B1, but it doesn't set off a mine (not sure if that was intentional or not).

Really good game and no logical errors at all or ambiguities (or not that I could see, unless I missed some of the possibilities with the scrambly ones). You do need a capitals list, unless you are some sort of superhuman robot though! I didn't need the clue in B4 as Chisinau was the last city I put in - consider removing it. Excellent fun stuff!
