1977 - Two 747s collide on the runway at Tenerife (North) airport in heavy fog.
Name both airlines
1985 - 747 crashes on Mt.Osutaka, Japan. Improper repairs after a tail strike 7 years earlier, led to a rupture of the pressure bulkhead.
1974 - DC-10 crashes into a forest at Ermenonville, France. A defective latching mechanism on the cargo door caused it to fail in flight resulting in decompression.
1985 - 747 blown up by a bomb while in Irish airspace at an altitude of 31,000 feet (9,400 m), and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.
1979 - DC-10 crashes at Chicago O'Hare Airport, after losing an engine during takeoff. Improper maintenance procedures were to blame.
1988 - 747 crashes at Lockerbie, Scotland after a bomb, planted by terrorists, explodes in the forward cargo area.
1983 - 747 shot down in Soviet airspace, west of Sakhalin, USSR, after it was mistaken for a spy plane.
2001 - Investigators attribute the crash of this Airbus A300 to the first officer's overuse of rudder controls in response to wake turbulence.
1979 - An incorrect computer-stored flight plan led to a navigational error which brought the DC 10 into a collision course with Mt. Erebus, Antarctica, in whiteout conditions.
1998 - MD-11 crashes into the Atlantic Ocean after experiencing an uncontrollable fire aboard.
2001 - Hijacking and deliberate destruction of 4 separate aircraft by terrorists result in the deaths of thousands.

1987 - Ilyushin IL-62M crashes near Warsaw after an engine fire and cabin decompression caused damage to the elevator and electrical system causing the plane to crash.
2008 - MD-82 crashes into a ravine while attempting to take off from Barajas Airport, Madrid, Spain.
2000 - MD-83's trimmable horizontal stabilizer jammed and broke free from its control system and the aircraft dove inverted into the Pacific Ocean, killing all on board.
1999 - 767 crashes into the Atlantic. The US govt claims aircraft was deliberately crashed by the First Officer in a suicide/homicide. Airline's home govt claims mechanical failure
2005 - Incorrect setting on cabin pressurization panel of this 737-300 caused all on board to succumb to hypoxia. The aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed into Greek hillside.
1985 - Lockheed L-1011 TriStar crashes on approach to the Dallas-Ft Worth. A meteorological phenomenon known as microburst-induced wind shear was a major factor.
1987 - Boeing 747 suffers catastrophic in-flight fire in cargo area and crashes into Indian Ocean near Mauritius killing all on board. The cause of the fire is never established.
2002 - Boeing 747 disintegrates in mid-air and crashes 20 minutes after taking off from Taipei. Faulty repair following an earlier tailstrike caused the entire tail section to fail
1985 - One engine of the Boeing 737 caught fire during takeoff. Despite successfully abandoning takeoff, 55 people died as the fire quickly found its way into the passenger cabin.
2009 - Airbus A320 encounters bird strike with a flock of geese just seconds after taking off from LaGuardia Airport, New York. Plane ditches safely into the Hudson River.
1986 - DC-9 collides in mid-air with a Piper Archer N4891F over Cerritos, California, causing both planes to go out of control, killing 82 people.
