nice list, take one minute off or the honor hints away otherwise it's a bit to easy

I can't believe ESPN put John Stockton as #4...he was definitely better than Isiah Thomas and probably the purest, ideal definition of a point guard there is.

Steve Nash might be the most overrated player in NBA history.

I've never really seen Robertson as a PG, personally. Fantastic player, and easily one of the best of all time, but I saw him more as a SG/SF. Think it's Stockton & Magic at the top, personally. Isaiah was great, but Stockton was a better pure PG.

@Vordeo: Robertson was a PG who also happened to be a great scorer (and rebounder). Are you aware that he averaged more assists per game for his career than Isaiah Thomas, Jason Kidd and Steve Nash? He's fourth on the all time APG list behind Magic, Stockton, and Chris Paul.

I can't argue with their top 5. But what I will ask is...Tiny at #8? Does he deserve that high of a ranking? (Note: I never saw him play)

Also, just pointing out that Derrick Rose already has an MVP. Many of these players do not. This isn't to say that he deserves a spot on this list already, just a warning that he (and Chris Paul) will likely be on this list by the end of their careers.

Wow, I would have thought Iverson would make the list. That being said, he wasn't really a true point guard in the same way as some of the others, and it's a strong 10 candidates ahead of him

Thomas does not belong on this list. He played on a great team that won because of its defense: he was the weak link defensively. He shot a ton and poorly. He always had the ball in his hands and was lucky to have smart guys like Dumars and Laimbeer around to bail him out when he did one of his stupid "I'll drive, jump in the air and if I can't shoot it, I'll kick it out." Thomas was way overrated and a bad person to boot.

Archibald was pretty flashy, although he's another one who always had the ball in his hands (kind of the anti-Kidd or anti-Magic.) The Big O was bigger and stronger than anyone playing guard at the time, but he was definitely a PG; btw, after his first 5 NBA seasons, his career averages were a triple-double. But you played Oscar's way or no way. Iverson was tough as nails, but all he did was shoot and shoot poorly (throw up 25 - 30 shots a game and you're going to score a lot.) Stockton's numbers are bogus (home court advantage like nobody else), but he ran the pick and roll with Malone so effectively the Jazz won 60 games a year for like a decade.

@TrivialSteve re, Isiah: Game 6 of the 88 Finals disagrees with you.

Missed Payton and Frazier. Where's Iverson, I'd put him over Frazier any day.

@rocky123 Iverson played mostly SG thru his career. I can't really argue much of this list, pretty decent. I agree with Stockton ahead of Thomas though.

I'd put Isiah ahead of Stockton. Stockton had a longer career and was a great, great player, but IMO Isiah was better in his prime; he did lead the Pistons to two titles.

anyone who thinks Stockton is a better point guard than Isiah is insane. and granted, I only really saw Stockton play in the 90's, but I always saw him get lit up in the playoffs by guys like Payton, Kevin Johnson, Terry Porter, and Rod Strickland, so I don't know how much the "he's the all time leader in steals!" argument holds up. great player to be sure, but no better than the fourth best point guard ever.

Very happy they have Robertson #2. He's extremely underrated and maybe the best non-C of all-time. Understandable he's under Magic.

I know that it's heresy to put anyone above Johnson/Stockton as the greatest PGs of all time, but Nash has a legitimate case. If you research the top NBA teams of all-time in terms of pace and era-adjusted offensive rating, Steve Nash was the starting PG for literally 5 out of the top 10, with 2 more outside of the top 10 but in the top 20. Then there's Jason Kidd, who was just so savvy and diverse; a walking triple double, even though he didn't have the height of Magic. Really, a case could be made for all 4 as the GOAT PG, in my opinion. http://www.basketball-reference.com/blog/?p=6205

How can anyone think Stockton is better than Isiah? U sound crazy for one Isiah has 2 more rings than Stockton 2 time all star MVP, finals MVP. Yeah Stockton holds the all time assist record however Isiah never played with a pf like Karl Malone just imagine what is numbers would look like if he had a Malone. Your judged on how many rings u got nowadays. And whoever thinks Nash and Kidd r in the top 5 hits the bottle 2 hard...Top 5 PG's. Johnson, Robertson, Thomas, Stockton, Kidd. Now thats a list!!

If people are going to use Thomas' 2 rings to Stockton's 0 as justification for why Thomas was a better PG, then they all have to admit that the following players are better than Michael Jordan: Bill Russell (11), Sam Jones (10), John Havlicek (8), Tommy Heinsohn (8), K.C. Jones (8), Tom "Satch" Sanders (8), Robert Horry (7), and Frank Ramsey (7).

@coulraphobic123 My thoughts exactly. Also, stockton and malone would've had multiple rings had they played in just about any other era other than the jordan pippen bulls.

@coul - cos all of those players lead their teams to their rings? Some of the generalisations on these comments astound me. Thomas & Stockton were both phenomenal point guards, and trying to act as though either is clearly better than the other is silly. It's not clear at all. Thats why different people have different views.

Rings are very important, but they're a team accomplishment. To me, they can be used to distinguish between players of similar caliber, but Stockton is far and away a better PG than Thomas.

To beef up Gary Payton's section, you might as well add his ring in 2006 with the Heat, though it was at the very end of his career.

Thomas is the best small guard ever. He doesn't have teammates like Malone or else.
