Haha, totally didn't realize this when I was in Jersey. The attendant threatened to call the cops when I picked up the nozzle.

Of course, Huntington, NY, where I live, also doesn't allow it. I don't know of any other town outside those two states that mandates full-service.

They're very forward-thinking states though. I mean, every time I pass a self-serve station I see somebody setting themselves on fire or drinking the gasoline or huddled up against their back tire rocking back and forth murmuring softly. A responsibility as serious as pumping gas shouldn't be given to the average citizen.

Shouldn't the title be something be more like "states WITHOUT self serve"?

...And yet, the gas here in Jersey is considerably (in some case, we're talking 40 cents a gallon) than in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, or Pennsylvania. I'm not sure how that works, but I'm definitely not complaining about it.

Let's see how much y'all complain about someone pumping your gas for you at no charge when it's raining out.

In Maine, you can always find full service. Maybe you could include all states with full service.

I had no idea that any state didn't allow self service. At least your hands don't smell like gas all day.

Seriously, gas is cheaper in jersey than new york, and its not self serve. How can you complain about that? I dont want to get out of my car when its freezing, raining, or snowing!

I live in Oregon and I hate not having self-serve. Contrary to popular belief, gas station attendant is not a highly desirable job, so the people in that position are not often masters of customer service. It might be a nice change of pace for visitors, but routinely waiting five minutes after the pump has stopped just to have it removed wears a little thin (as do the enormous lines at gas stations that I never saw when I lived out of state). Of course, the last thing we need is fewer jobs in this state, so maybe it's worth keeping around a bit longer just for that.

I live in Jersey. If you hate it its because you cant afford it. It has everything im in North Jersey. Mountains an hour from the ocean 2 hours from the second biggest gambling city in America and of course being the hub of the greatest city in the world.

I grew up in Oreon, and always thought it was okay. Then I lived in California for a while and realized what an unbelievable pain in the ass it is to have to wait for some guy to pump your gas for you.

I hate full-serve, but then again getting out of the car for five minutes to pump my own gas is no problem. Plus I hate giving my debit card to anyone. Oh, and gas in Jersey is cheap because it all comes in through New York/Newark/Elizabeth and is refined in Jersey. Those smelly refineries are there for something!

Another Oregonian for self-serve gas--waiting for the attendant, who will probably spill gas on your fender, is a pain.

In case you're pissed off about the station attendant taking forever, try to ignore the fact that you cant take a left hand turn in Jersey as well. They've got it all figured out.

the reason NJ gas is so cheap while we have full-service is because of lower insurance for the stations because of full-service and our proximity to refineries in philly.

@csl: And we should force construction companies to dig with shovels rather than backhoes, not to mention ban ATMs. That will really bring jobs back!
