Hint: For soccer, the UK is divided into its 4 separate nations.

Not a bad quiz but frustrating to put in one name of a country (United Kingdom, United States, eg) and not have it be recognized.

awesome quiz, but i think you should accept northern ireland and scotland as part of the United Kingdom or at least put an asterik next to their rank and in the game note put part of larger nation or something like that

In football (soccer) it's obvious that UK is divided to these four teams, it shouldn't be necessary to announce that. (At least the comment row is enough.)

Slovakia took me by surprise, I didn't know it got points from Czechoslovakia...

Can you add a note that only present day teams are included? I wasted a bit of time putting in East Germany, West Germany, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, etc. because so many other WC quizzes keep the former countries separate.

What? You mean that there are officially countries which are worse at football than Scotland?

In this context, what is a point? I know you get points in the group stages (hence the tables), 3 for win, 1 for draw, 0 for loss. Looking at the source this is the case for all games, but do wins in extra time/penalties count as a win or a draw in the knockout rounds?

The points do include games in the knockout rounds. I will add that in the description.

How are England that high? We've only got past the quater finals twice!

In the knockout rounds, everything is either 3 points or 0 except when the match goes to penalty kicks, where both teams get 1.

I assume England are high because they frequently get to the quarterfinals. The countries ahead of England tend to be the ones that dominate the later rounds - they've won 14 of the 19 World Cups, and 24 out of 38 finals appearances.

mjago - I think your way of handling former countries in inconsistent. For example, czechoslovakia points counted towards both CR and slovakia. USSR points only counted towards russia, and yugoslavia points only counted towards serbia. I don't know if both East and West Germany points counted towards Germany, but from the size of their points I assume probably only West Germany. I suggest as a result you either 1) split out old countries like in other quizzes 2) just say its only existing countries and ignore the points scored by old countries or 3) note exactly whose points count for who in the game note.

I'm sorry but this is the way that FIFA has awarded the points to the teams as shown by the link below. I wish I had a better answer.

Wtf at some of these scores! Did both Slovakia and Czech Republic share Czechoslovakia's score or something? Because how are Slovakia ahead of Bulgaria for instance? And did Serbia get all of Yugoslavia's points?

Congratulations on getting an "Editor Pick" for this one! Well done, Mr Sports Editor: you've finally noticed that there are other sports outside the North American "Big Four". Long may this recognition endure.

@eurythmech: I would guess the allocation of the points comes about because of the nature of how the splits came about - Czech Republic and Slovakia split from each other, whereas with Yugoslavia it was a case of all the other countries leaving the union until only Serbia was left.

Odd way to award the points to the former yugoslavian republics. Why do Serbia get credit for the yugoslavian points and not the likes of Slovenia and Croatia which have been as successful or more successful in the world cup since the breakup, when both the Czech Republic and Slovakia gets credit for czechoslovakia? Couldn't you argue that germanys points should include GDRs points aswell?

And if it is as Jason_H suggests, then why are Russia awarded CCCPs points over the likes of Belarus and Ukraine when Russia was one of the first countries to break free of the soviet union?

previous countries that no longer exist need to be treated separately. Giving the USSR's points to russia but not the ukraine and other USSR nations is wrong. Same thing for czechoslovakia, west germany etc.

Philyfan32: FIFA recognises Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales as separate, which means each of the national teams play on the international stage; therefore FIFA rules should apply to this, or any other quiz on football.

@skiforlife: It's not "wrong", it's how FIFA have decided the points will be allocated. By all means complain to them about it, but it's not the quiz makers' fault.
