Can you name the pairs of US major party candidates who ran against each other and both went on to become president?
created by
miyomiyo1050
Enter a pair in the box below
Correctly named pairs will show up below
Answers do not have to be guessed in order
This only includes elections where the candidates went on to be presidents later; for example the 1976 Ford-Carter election is not counted because Ford was not ever president after 1976.

Nice idea, but TECHNICALLY, JQAdams didn't 'run' against Monroe; one elector voted for him so Washington would be the ony unanimous President.

Actually, that story about William Plumer, Jr.'s electoral vote is apocryphal. His own writings indicate that maintaining some sort of Washingtonian sanctity was NOT the reason for his voting for JQ Adams. http://www.jstor.org/pss/1835054

1912 should be added: Wilson, Roosevelt and Taft were all Presidents.

Although the question states "both went on to become President", Roosevelt had been a former President, Taft was an incumbent (so like every other time a President was defeated in an election) and Wilson went on to become President. Therefore the way the question is phrased 1912 is not an answer.

PresidentJSC is correct; only one of those three candidates went on to be president. Read the note at the top for further clarification.

Hejman is right; although I still believe that JQAdams didn't RUN for President.
