It's interesting that if Bush hadn't "won" the election in 2000 he wouldn't be on this list.

@Dr. Know: Don't forget 1888! Cleveland had more popular vote, but Harrison was the winner in the electoral college. Of course, 4 years later history would correct itself.

The number for Kennedy is wrong. To get him to that total, you have to misallocate to him votes cast for another Democrat in Alabama, who ran as an anti-Kennedy Democrat.

Hayes would have won the popular vote in a landslide if not for suppression of the black vote due to 1) physical intimidation by the KKK and 2) constitutionally suspect legal obstacles.

@Buckeyebob, you're probably right, but there was also fairly widespread (although not quite as rampant) voter fraud by the Republicans in that election too. Not to mention the fact that Tilden probably should have won at least 1 of those disputed electoral votes. Either way, no matter who wins that election, it was kind of a trainwreck.

Mungar is right. Truman won the popular vote by around 2 million votes and the electoral college by 114. A close election, like the 2000 election, had the popular vote won by around 500,000 and the electoral college was won by 5.

If you brought the cutoff down just a little bit, you could've included Mitt Romney's 47-karma.

When Hayes won, it effected the South Carolina 1876 governor's election. Wade Hampton III and Chamberlain were both trying to claim office after controversial vote counting. Hampton was backed up by most white South Carolinians, while Chamberlain was backed up by the military. Since Hayes had promised to take the military out of the south if he was elected, when he was elected he took the military out, and Chamberlain lost his defense and Hampton claimed office.

Wow, did't realize the Kennedy-Nixon race was that close! I thought Nixon-Humphrey was closer.

Dang, what was going on in the US in the 1870s and 1880s?? Four elections in a row on this list-- 1876, 1880, 1884, and 1888-- including 2 where the popular vote winner lost the electoral vote.

@Chrisotx: The 68 election was also close by popular vote, but George Wallace as a 3rd party candidate got about 13% of the vote so both Nixon & Humphrey were under 45%.
