Many great running backs' yardage totals were limited by shorter NFL seasons. Adjusting actual yards/game data to a 16 game basis results in 10 'equivalent' 2,000 yard seasons.(See first two comments)

Many of the greatest running backs' yardage totals were limited by shorter NFL seasons. Adjusting actual yards/game data to a 16 game basis results in ten "equivalent" 2,000 seasons, three of which surpass the actual single-season record.

A similar quiz by redsox19 indicates that 27% of respondents can name all 6 actual 2,000 yard rushers without providing the team as a hint. Given that data and the celebrity of the additional players, I have followed suit.

Very nice job, minnmich. In a 16-game season, a back must play every game and average 125 yards rushing per game to reach 2000 yards (in the old 12-game season, the average would have been 166.67 per game, and the 14-game season would have required 142.85 per game). Only 11 times in history has a back averaged at least 125 yards per game in a season. I wish you had included Earl Campbell’s 1980 season, when he rushed for 1934 yards (a 128.9 average) in only 15 games. That guy delivered more punishment to defensive players than anybody (except maybe Jim Brown), and he’s paying for it today, as he can barely walk and sometimes requires the use of a wheelchair. Add 129 yards to his season, and he ends up with a total of 2063 yards. He deserves a spot on your list.

Thanks for the interesting comment, burt. Campbell was indeed a punishing runner (with 34" thighs according to one announcer). He got dinged in Week 3 & missed Week 4. When recovered he posted four 200yd games on his way to his 1934 yd campaign. (Given that data, it's rather difficult to believe Brian Sipe was named MVP that year.)Campbell may indeed deserve an *asterisk* on this quiz.
