| Except that the term came from Sam Maverick because he didn't brand the cows, hence the wandering brandless cows called "mavericks" and not "wandering brandless cows." If you're going to go by etymology then the original source is a man, not an animal (unless you're considering humans on the list, meaning everything from "Cavaliers" to "Browns" has to be included.) In any case, the team is clearly named for mavericks as in outlaws, not as in cattle, especially considering one of the minority owners, James Garner, was the star of "Maverick" (in which he portrayed a human.) Especially considering the animal mascot they use is a horse, not cattle of any kind. |
