| A really good director - an 'auteur' in the auteur theory sense, meaning his films are distinctly his, even for the 'gun for hire' stuff (the Chevy Chase starrer, for example). Some light seemed to go out in him between They Live and the 90s movies, however, and never come back on. The quality of the films declines perceptibly and never really recovers, and they start to feel by the numbers and half-assed where previously he'd put something really vital and original into them (which isn't to say they're all bad - I like his 90s movies). I don't know how he used to be, but if you watch interviews with him from the past decade+, he just seems burned out and dour and cynical about filmmaking.
But what'll last is his work from the beginning thru the 80s. Can't take that away from him. |
