	The figures for Belgium can't be right. Everybody is obliged to go to school for 12 years. After you've finished that, you can begin with higher studies. I think this also counts for the Netherlands. And seriously, the US being the most educated country in the world is just a ridiculous idea :D!

	Just a point, Bart--everyone in Belgium may be required to go to school for 12 years NOW, but there are many people living in the country who did not have to, either because of immigration or because when they were growing up, those laws weren't in place.

	I could have tried Slovakia but didn't after the Czech Republic (Bohemia and Moravia) didn't show up. Odd that France doesn't appear.

	i don't understand this cos in the UK you have to start at 5 and have to stay on until you are 16 with 11 years of compulsory schooling

	These numbers simply don't make sense. In Canada, for example, you go to school for 12 years, plus two of kindergarten. High school dropout rates aren't high enough to bring these numbers down below eleven, especially when you consider post-secondary education. Immigration can't be the cause either, because one would expect that countries like Canada and the US would be dropped more by this than countries that have less immigration.

	The source is alittle strange, and has two other interesting lists on the site: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/edu_dur_of_com_edu-education-duration-of-compulsory and http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/edu_sch_lif_exp_tot-education-school-life-expectancy-total The first is about the length of compulsory educations. In there, the USA and UK have 12years, whereas Germany and Netherlands have 13years. It is alittle strange that USA actually hit this target precisely whereas the others miss out by several years. The second is the "School Life Expectancy" of the (not quite) current generation, which is 15.2 years for USA and 16.9 years for Norway.

	In the Netherlands you must go to school from 4 till 16, and there are people who didn't do that because in their school period they didnt have to do that, but that is in the USA too.
