Very interesting variation. If you can remember who sang on "We Are The World" or played at Live Aid, you're halfway there.
Spelling corrections: Lionel
Richie
(no T), John Cougar
Mellencamp
.

Thanks for picking up the spelling errors - after typing 100 entries my eyes were blurry! BTW - I was at the Live Aid Concert in Phila.

@Midlifecrisis: Hey, so was I! Halfway up the stands at the far end of JFK. Took a 12 hour bus ride from Toronto and was dropped off at the stadium at 7 am. Immediately greeted a drunk girl who walked up to me, belched in my face and walked away. The endless line up for toilets. The heat. Interrupting Elton John on satellite to bring us Ashford & Simpson live. The amateur who opened the show at JFK and forgot the song he was going to sing. So many good memories.

I was on the floor pretty close to the stage, because my brother worked on the concert and got me passes. I still remember the fans telling Madonna to take it all off (she had just posed nude) and her saying "I ain't taking sh*t off". Good times indeed.

Interesting how no one has answered the no. 5 song of the year, by Chaka Khan. I guess she was quite forgettable.

Yeah, Madonna completely turned that crowd around in 15 minutes. There were boos from the "too cool for Madonna" crowd when she came on, but a standing ovation for her at the end. I gained a lot of respect for her that day. She was also the only white American act under 30 at the show. And Run-DMC was the only other US act under 30.

I really enjoyed the quiz. Very challenging. The tiniest of the tiniest errors: it should be DeBarge. And I think you mean Glenn Frey both times. Glen Frey used to be an 'American college football head coach'. ^^

@Xala: Thanks for picking up Glen. I also thought it was DeBarge but the list I had spelled it Debarge. Oh well, I'll change it - thanks!

I can just imagine Jermaine Jackson looking at the results page of this quiz and thinking "Wow! I had no idea I was
this
well-known."

I bet most of the people who got Jermaine Jackson (I didn't) wanted to guess Michael or Janet... but neither had a 1985 hit. Got a lot of them (79/100), but can't believe I missed Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin!

I remember the time, but without the song titles, I couldn't place too many of the artists that were big. The mid 80's were a bit of an odd timeframe for music, as new wave had run its course, but metal and rap had yet to really hit the mainstream. But I did major face palming when I saw all the acts that I forgot about.

Wasn't sure about that year specifically, so I relied on Bowling for Soup's help... "Springsteen, Madonna, way before Nirvana... U2, Blondie, music still on MTV"

@Define: There's one song from the era, that if you remember who all sang on it, will give you about 20 points.

Man, I only got half of these right, but as soon as the quiz ended and I saw the other answers, the tunes popped right into my head. What a great year (plus, my favorite team won the World Series).

Amazingly, the Mr. Mister song "Broken Wings" is on my Billboard top hits of 1985 CD, but not on this list. The website linked to has it on the 1986 list for some reason. (Along with "Kyrie." Both songs were released as singles in 1985. I can buy "Kyrie" charting for 1986 since it was released in December 1985, but "Broken Wings" was released in September 1985. It should be on the 1985 list. Not saying this is a problem with the quiz, rather with whoever put the original list together.)

How is this list compiled? Because Elton John had a top 40 hit every year from liek 197? to 1998 or 1999 and in 1985 he had Nikita which hit #7...I was shocked when he wasn't an answer

@Etheridge: "Nikita" didn't chart until Jan 1986. His only 1985 hit was "In Neon" which peaked at #38 on the weekly chart, so not big enough for the year end top 100.

@oklaclarinet: The Billboard chart year used to determine the top 100 hits runs from Dec 1 on the previous year to Nov 30 of the actual year. So between September and November it didn't get enough points to make the year end.
That's one reason I personally prefer the year-end lists from Fred Bronson's Hottest Hot 100 Lists book. The song's entire run is included in whichever year it reached it's apex. So songs released in August thru November don't get their points split between two years.

@etheridge - I thought the same thing you did. My confusion is that the title of the quiz makes it seem like it's looking for all artists who had a Top 100 hit at any time in 1985 (which would obviously include Elton John), but it's actually looking for the artists that made up the year-end Top 100.

Boy this was a ****ty year for pop. Fortunately I was listening to Violent Femmes and Minutemen by that spring so top 40 was a thing of the past

Well, Michael didn't have an album out at the time, so it makes sense that Jermaine would be included.

I can't believe I missed Billy Ocean! I've been listening to the Suddenly album a lot lately so there's no excuse.
