| @Propellerhead - I'm surprised somebody didn't question this sooner. From 1979 to 1985, the Emmy Awards decided (very foolishly) to include one-time guest appearances as part of the regular acting categories. For example, Ruth Gordon won the 1979 Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (over such luminaries as Jean Stapleton and Isabel Sanford) for her central role in a single episode of Taxi entitled "Sugar Mama." Other performers to win non-guest Emmys for guest appearances during this time were Mariette Hartley (for The Incredible Hulk), Alfre Woodard (for Hill Street Blues), and, as you mentioned, James Coco and Doris Roberts. It was a terrible rule and thankfully they did away with it in 1986, but technically Coco and Roberts DID win non-guest Emmys in 1983 along with Ed Flanders' Emmy, so the answer is technically correct. However, it might be nice to put some sort of an asterisk next to that answer to signify the unusual circumstances (I'm directing this last sentence to Sporcle, who has control of the quiz now that it's been published). Thanks for your sharp eye! |
