I almost didn't include the racewalking due to general lameness, but they do make for a better quiz. It's nice to have a couple of obscure answers to keep it interesting.

They are part of the Olympics, why wouldn't you include them?

This quiz was awesome!

Good quiz, but way too much time. Two minutes would be better, or maybe even one to make it really challenging.
Apr 15th, 2011 at 02:35 GMT
Noted. I knocked the time down to three minutes, which I agree is pretty generous, but fair. I think I accepted enough alternatives, but I want to give enough time to folks who might be unsure at first of how I'm expecting the answers to be written. (i.e. "100 meter dash" vs. "100m", etc.)

Does anyone have a better classification for the steeple than "Other?" You can call it middle distance, or you can call it hurdling, but neither is really quite correct. (You can also call it brutal, which is 100% correct. Most exhausting track race I've ever done.)

Great little quiz In general listings such as IAAF the steeplechase comes between the marathon and the 110/100 hurdles and really stands on its own as there are no natural events to switch to as there are with the other track events. Timing is right. Not everyone can type quick, I have a disabled friend who is frustrated by the assumption everyone can touch type. I am an average typist but quick thinker and I completed this with 25 seconds left so a good barometer.

1 mile? 2 mile?
May 24th, 2012 at 15:27 GMT
it shouldn't require you to type "100 meter dash" Entering in 100, 400, 1500, etc (like I tried) should get you the right answer.
May 25th, 2012 at 00:40 GMT
The quiz doesn't and never has required that. "100m," "400m," etc. will work, though.
May 25th, 2012 at 02:14 GMT
@mflournoy - i think you have options. You can either take the hurdles routs and say 'steeplechase' and require the distance, or I think stick with what you've got, which is better. Although I couldn't think of it for the life of me. Also, I love watching olympic walking, its hilarious! Only lame in the sense noone can walk further after 50k of it.
May 28th, 2012 at 19:07 GMT
I always think the pent is in the Olympics. Could race walk be an acceptable answer? I don't know the distances of those 'races'. Also, I would put pole vault into the 'other' category, as it is not a true jump, hence, pole VAULT. Perhaps, with the pole, it's an 'assisted jump'. Fun quiz.

Guess the modern pentathlon isnt all that modern.
Jun 25th, 2012 at 19:41 GMT
Please accept 400 meter relay and 1600 meter relay.
Jun 25th, 2012 at 19:55 GMT
so thats how you spell decathlon...
Jun 25th, 2012 at 19:59 GMT
110 meter hudles is mis-typed. Still a great quiz 5 globes!
Jun 25th, 2012 at 20:23 GMT
I swore the 3000m was an Olympic event...so much so I had to go research it. Surprise surprise, it NEVER has been. Fun quiz.
Jun 25th, 2012 at 20:27 GMT
Ugh! Horrible for a Brit! For a country that refuses to accept the metric system the US had no problem changing metre to meter!!
Jun 25th, 2012 at 21:06 GMT
Great quiz -- The only nit to pick is that I thought the sub-categories made it a little too easy.
Jun 26th, 2012 at 01:07 GMT
forgot the steeplechase, went for shooting and archery ha
Jun 26th, 2012 at 11:52 GMT
i put 3000m steeplechase and it wouldn't let me. i think 3000m steeplechase should be accepted.
Jun 26th, 2012 at 12:39 GMT
Yeah please accept 3000m steeplechase or words to that effect :) Also maybe a tiny bit of capitalisation would be nice.
Jun 27th, 2012 at 23:34 GMT
Dang, I was sure that there was a 1600 meter (one mile) race in the Olympics. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't take that and then I remembered the 1500.
Jun 28th, 2012 at 07:09 GMT
Please ensure that "metre" is accepted for "meter" as this is the original and CORRECT English spelling.
Aug 4th, 2012 at 16:16 GMT
Wouldn't mind seeing 100 meters, etc. accepted.
Aug 15th, 2012 at 15:42 GMT
In response to those giving grief about the pentathlon...the modern pentathlon IS in the Olympics but is not an Athletics event; it's considered a separate sport.

Great quiz - nice topic and great to be tested on this subject. But can I be particular and say that although the Marathon is a running event, it, along with the walking races are actually road races - the same way that the cycling road races are not velodrome races. I cite the 'Official world championship track and field events' page.
Nov 14th, 2012 at 01:59 GMT
@snorkley, whilst the marathon and walks are road races, they should absolutely be accepted in this category. The reason being, the correct term for what americans call 'track and field' is: 'athletics'. There is no such thing as the world track and field championships, there is however the world athletics championships in which the marathon and walks are included. Its just another example of Americans changing the names of world wide accepted sports (calling it soccer instead of football, hockey instead of ice hockey, and track and field instead of athletics).
May 6th, 2013 at 20:49 GMT
I put 100 & 400 m hurdle without the "s" which I think should be accepted.
