Is it sad that, even though this stuff is twenty years old now, I have more than half of these on itunes? :)

Now I know why I can't do the geography quizzes-- my brain is full of hair metal bands. Fun, and slightly embarrassing trip down memory lane.

Dokken was at best, a minor act. I don't understand why Iron Maiden isn't on this quiz. They weren't "hair" metal, but along with Priest, they were the forerunners of the genre.

Great quiz. Even though I was born in '89, I love 80's music. Hair Metal is probably my favorite genre, and I love nearly all of these songs. How about a 90's bands quiz?

Dokken never made it really big...most of my more serious metal head friends hated Dokken. I actually like them, but they just couldn't compete with the other really big bands of the day.

According to an article at the Onion, after 20+ years, the members of Twisted Sister have allowed that they would now be open to the idea of "taking it"...

Sister Christian...give me a break. That was about as metal as Ave Maria. Night Ranger was in no way, shape or form a metal band. They played crap and couldn't figure out their identity. They had one long-haired guy who thought he was a rock god, one guy who looked like he should be playing be-bop jazz in a smoky club, a preppie-looking guy, a guy who looked like he belonged in a corporate office somewhere and a few other people so un-metal they were totally void of any features worth remembering. Anyone think different?

Great quiz I only missed one oh and by the way black sabbath was the first band to be described in a review as sounding as heavy as metal which is where the music being described as "heavy metal" came from whole lotta sporcle.

Almost missed Motley Crue because I got tricked up by the song. I find it would be more helpful to use a more popular song like Dr. Feelgood instead, but that is just me.

not to nit pick, but "from" seems to denote these bands first started in the 80s. Aerosmith, Van Halen, Judas Priest, AC/DC all began in the 70's... good fun though. Thanks!

The 80s rocked, it's a shame that pussy Cobain had to come along and ruin it all.

Kurt Cobain? Ruin music? Pussy? Jesus, you can't say more wrong things in the same sentence! Do yourself a favor, and buy one of their CDs. Nirvana >>>> anyone else

They should've included a Sabbath 80s song in here just to see how many people actually followed them after the Dio years.

Kurt Cobain was AMAZING! He wasn't as good as classics like 'DC GNR or the like, but Nirvana was an amazing band! @dakota: Many bands here are not "metal" - AC/DC for example are Hard Rock, although Angus calls them Rock N' Roll :)

@Oathbreaker: No, Sandy Pearlman (Blue Oyster Cult's Manager) invented the phrase Heavy Metal in 1972.
