I was going about this quiz all wrong - I was thinking of the biggest cities, not the smallest states.

I did the same thing- new york was the first so then I thought LA but then quickly realized that in states like alaska, there might only be one big city

Maybe give one or two more minutes? 3 minutes seems kind of short.

I'm smart. I was typing in all the states and wondering why only new york was showing up. XD

Great quiz because you can't just name big cities in the US, you have to think about the small states as well.

@ Psycho - There's a large population in Maryland based in the DC suburbs of Prince George's and Montgomery counties. That's probably why Baltimore didn't make the cut.

Silly me; I was searching for small, easily-dominated states and got all eight, but then the big two escaped me. Always check your unconscious assumptions.

Great idea (and, having grown up in South Dakota, Sioux Falls was the first one I got) but there may be a little too much time; it quickly degenerates into a "name the biggest city in every state you can think of" quiz. I was surprised not to see Delaware here, but I guess there are other suburbs of Philly as well as Wilmington that are in Delaware, so it's that old "city versus metro area" issue again.

Psycho- There are three counties in Maryland with larger populations than Baltimore. Baltimore used to be a very large city compared to the rest of the United States and dominated Maryland, but not so much anymore.

@Yoshiman: The city of Boston itself is not very big. In fact, it has a population of only 620,000 people, which makes up about 1/7th of its own metropolitan area. Factor in the rest of state, and it is not even at 10%.

Excellent quiz! I gave it 5 sporcle-balls. One minor suggestion: Even though your source makes it clear that you mean U.S. cities, perhaps the quiz description should read "Can you name the U.S. cities that contain ...", since many other countries also have states. After all, sporcle has an international audience. :-)

I would suggest clarifying that these are metro areas. I finally got that when Henderson didn't work but Las Vegas did. (Another South Dakotan here for whom Sioux Falls came naturally.)

Thanks for the comments/ratings/plays everyone. One person suggested more time, and one suggested less, so I'm going to keep it at 3 minutes. I added "US" because that was vague. Finally, it's population of cities, not metro areas. Las Vegas has twice as many people as Henderson, check it: http://www.census.gov/popest/cities/tables/SUB-EST2008-04-32.csv

I wasn't thinking about New York City at first then I figured out that the state of New York, while the nation's 3rd most populated state, had about 17-20 million people. Los Angeles carries about 11 to 12 percent of California's population, while its county is about 25-30 percent of the state population.

Every upstate New Yorker who is prejudiced against the city and its suburbs (LI & Westchester, and maybe 2 or 3 counties above Westchester) should look at this. Including the suburbs, downstate is over 50 percent of the population, yet they claim we "ruin their state".

You do ruin the state. Take a vacation in the Adirondacks for a week or two and then go back to the city and tell me how long it takes you to get adjusted to the smell again. ;-)

Nitpicky comment: Your title should be DOMINANT (adjective) Cities, NOT "Dominate" (verb) Cities. Dominant cities may dominate their states, but they are not "dominate"!

Boston and Denver suffer because the question is using city limits population and not metro area. The city of Boston only has 620,000 people or about 9.5% of Massachusetts. Metro Boston has 69% of the population of Massachusetts. The city of Denver also has about 600,000 people or 12% of the state of Colorado. Metro Denver would be about 50% of Colorado.

Should do a metro area one, too. Honolulu has a lot of "suburbs" which might make Hawaii #1 on a list. The problem would be that many metros span 2+ states, like New York, DC, Philadelphia, Portland, Cincinnati, Boston, and Charlotte. Regards to Denver, Aurora and Lakewood are suburbs with at least 200,000+, so Denver would not make this list.
