I'm surprised Hodor hasn't mentioned himself more than 500 times.

I got 45. I missed Robb, when I realized that I kicked myself. >_< And I guessed Thorne's name three different ways, as well as Brynden's, but it didn't give me either. Which is ridiculous, because it gave me Luwin on the typo Luqin... I'd never have gotten Jeyne or Mordane though. Those I don't care about. :P

Would never have guessed Lyanna and forgot Rickon XD. My bad. Otherwise, I can't believe Jon Arryn didn't make the list (they talk about his murder enough). And agreed, I expected more Hodor :P. Were references to "The Kingslayer" included in Jamie's tally (or I suppose all nicknames really, like The Blackfish, or Littlefinger's real name, etc).

I initially didn't count Hodor saying his name since it's not really the same as someone mentioning him but changed it to include that. Also added Jon Arryn since I had forgotten to include him. And I attempted to include all major nicknames such as the Hound, Littlefinger, Kingslayer, etc. in the totals when possible.

Just counted 60 instances of "Mirri" - I think you should check your counting.

Vespinito- I'm using the google books feature since that's what's available to me and it doesn't show every single instance. Normally only shows 2 per page. This means that everyone's total is lower than actual but should be close enough relative to each other that it only makes a difference for two or three for the purposes of this list. I decided to use instances where Mirri was called Maegi which bumped her from 52nd onto the list. If there are any other nicknames you think I missed let me know, but in terms of pure numbers they're as close as they're going to be without me physically counting every mention in the books.

Great quiz, and it would be the most splendid thing ever if you made one for the entire series.

Really good quiz. Could it accept 'Lord Commander Mormont', cause although I remembered that it had been mentioned in the books, I had no clue what his first name was.

Great quiz! Just a few more days before Dance with Dragons! Brynden Tully requires you to write out his whole name, which almost made me miss it. I'm surprised that Janos Slynt didn't make the list, but he might just be in Clash of Kings to a much greater degree.

There sure are a lot of characters in these books. These are all pretty important characters, with distinct personalities, and there's probably another 50 characters introduced in this book about whom the same can be said, but who aren't mentioned enough to make the list, and then several dozen more introduced in each subsequent book...lots and lots of characters...

Great quiz. I wouldn't have done so well if I hadn't just re-read them all before Dragons came out. I did guess Lyanna and it didn't come up but one of the archived comments makes it seem like she was there? I couldn't remember Luwin's name, and forgot about Benjen and Rodrik Cassell. (should've got Benjen!)

I really like the idea for the quiz, but I think it needs to be more lenient in accepting last names that aren't duplicates. I can understand why Stark/Lannister/Baratheon wouldn't be accepted, but I typed both Thorne and Cassell expecting hits; when they didn't come up, I just moved on. My lack of pattern recognition skills, of course, is partly to blame. In conclusion, Dance With Dragons!!!

Just realized you used the book and not the show, Shaggydog and Nymeria were definitely mentioned more than Mirri too.

Stannis is doing surprisingly well for someone who stays offstage. Bit surprised to see Cersei so low actually.

There's definitely a judgment call here in choosing not to regard the direwolves as characters. They're definitely given distinct personalities and roles in the story, though, so I would question that decision.

Consider accepting "aurochs" for Grenn. And kebertxela is right, it's Samwell Tarly.

Surprised Syrio didn't make the cut (no pun intended). He struck me as far more memorable as some of those who were mentioned more frequently (eg Jeyne Poole). And interesting, though not surprising, how many characters on this list had died before the book even begins. I love how the book creates a sense of history.

A little surprised that none of Irri, Jhiqui or Doreah made it, also Syrio, although he was only in for a fairly short but explosive time. Definitely agree that the direwolves should qualify. My main problem was that I'm part way through the second book at the moment, so was trying people like Jaqen H'ghar, and Davos the Onion Knight!

Darn, I really wish that Walder Frey was mentioned more in the first book as I really enjoyed typing the Late Lord Frey (probably as much as Hoster Tully enjoyed calling him that), but alas he wasn't an answer

there's no such thing as "george rr martin's game of thrones." if you mean references on the tv show, then its "hbo's game of thrones" but if you mean references in the first book of the ASOIAF series, its "george rr martin's A game of thrones"

Jamie Lannister is spelt wrong, also if you accept 'Littlefinger' for Petyr Baelish, then why not 'Kingslayer' for Jamie Lannister??
