Great quiz, but you should call it the hottest states similar to how you call your other one the coldest states.

I loved both of these quizzes! Please make it 2 minutes. I really was astonished that North and South Dakota recorded one of the highest temperatures in the US. It also recorded one of the coldest.

I think you should make it clear in your title and/or instructions that this quiz is based on the highest temperature ever recorded in these states - not their overall average temperature. Otherwise, Hawaii, Florida and all the Gulf states would be on here.

Cool quiz (or should I say hot! I know terrible joke). It would be nice if you could provide the year these temps were recorded, just to add a little extra info.

@deco: on average, they are — but they’re basically pretty hot all the time, whereas the Dakotas, being far inland, get a really swingy climate, so occasionally get really really hot (and by the same token, sometimes get really really cold).

Huh... the Dakotas are also on the Coldest States quiz. That seems strange. But like Pit_trout said, I guess this isn't averages.

North and South Dakota are on both hot and cold quizzes because of how they lie close to the middle of North America. Oceans lessen temperature changes by serving as a sink for heat, so even though the Gulf Coast and Hawaii are humid, they aren't as strictly hot as you can get in the middle of the continent.

The Dakotas aren't a surprise to anyone who has visited there. The Badlands is one of the harshest deserts in the country.

I figured North Dakota would be on here. My dad was in college in Colorado when my grandpa got transferred to Minot AFB in ND. Dad went to visit them in the summer and thought, "Wow," as the temperature was about 105 that day. Then when he went to visit them for Christmas, he got on the plane in Denver, and it was snowing lightly and in the high 20s. He thought ND would be the same. He got off the plane in ND and thought, "HOLY COW!!!!!" It was -5.

Before I took this quiz, if anyone had told me North Dakota gets warmer than Florida or Hawaii, I would have thought them mad, or at least confused.

This quiz really illustrates the 'moderating' effect of oceans: Areas near the ocean never really get all that hot or all that cold, while areas in the middle of continents can get REALLY hot and REALLY cold.

I'm surprised Utah isn't on here. I took a camping trip to Moab a few summers ago (yeah, I know, camping in the desert in July--not my smartest decision) and I don't think I've ever been anyplace that hot--106, 107, & 109 the three days I was there.
