Ok, I don´t know if such a quiz has already been done. If so, please tell me. Otherwise, enjoy it! :-)
Dec 16th, 2009 at 22:31 GMT
Nice quiz. I made (but never released) a quiz exactly like this but with metro areas, so I happen to think this a brilliant idea.
Dec 17th, 2009 at 02:34 GMT
Great quiz! Very interesting. :)
Dec 17th, 2009 at 05:22 GMT
So, the title of the second column is wrong. It should say "country" instead of "city". I tried to fix that, but it doesn´t save the changes... Any ideas how to get that right?
Dec 17th, 2009 at 05:56 GMT
Excellent quiz. Very interesting indeed. 5/5
Dec 17th, 2009 at 07:05 GMT
@marsco: if you changed it to Country, and hit "save changes" at the bottom, it shoudl change. if it hasn't, i think it's just a glitch
Dec 17th, 2009 at 07:16 GMT
Isn't Soweto included in the population of Johannesburg, South Africa?
Dec 17th, 2009 at 07:23 GMT
@ fatbeard: Yeah, it seems like some bug indeed. On the editing page, it already says "country", but apparently it doesn´t transfer to the game itself. @ Fidelio: Good that you mention it! Soweto was indeed a tricky one. Sources weren´t unanimous on that. Perhaps I should put it into brackets.

Fascinating quiz. Maybe a couple of minutes too long? Just throwing it out there.
Dec 17th, 2009 at 12:54 GMT
Great quiz. I got all right in the last minute, so I think the time is perfectly right ;-)
Dec 17th, 2009 at 13:25 GMT
@marsco: great quiz idea. Citymayors.com seems to be a decent & commonly-used source. By the way, according to that site, Canada should be listed with 4 (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver & Ottawa).
Dec 17th, 2009 at 13:32 GMT
also, according to Citymayors.com, Argentina should be on here with Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Rosario & Mendoza. Different sources use different stats for population, though, and some of these are close calls, so it's probably a good idea to pick a single source and be explicit about which one it is.

Good quiz. Citymayor also lists Donetsk in Ukraine as having 1,050,000 people (giving them 5). Doesn't affect the answers though....
Dec 17th, 2009 at 15:26 GMT
Canada should be on the list with 5: Citymayors.com lists Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa and Calgary as over 1 million
Dec 17th, 2009 at 15:46 GMT
@melissa, lixo: Please note that I only included core cities with over 1´000´000 people on here, and what is often listened on citymayors.com are urban areas. So, for instance, in Canada´s case Vancouver, Ottawa and Calgary don´t qualify. And citymayors.com is often not the most reliable source, as some data is a bit old. E.g. Germany: Cologne is still listed on there as having less than 1 million people, while official statistical data (which are definitely more reliable) say that it passed the mark about 2 years ago. @Pistol: Thanks for noting I´ll add Donetsk.
Dec 17th, 2009 at 16:18 GMT
I agree that Argentina should be on here with the 4 that Melissa mentioned. Not that I am a predjudiced resident of Rosario or anything. really good quiz!

a bit of a iffy one is this due to differences in the way coutnries do things. Some prefer to group their cities into one so they have bigger city limits, others (like britain) have pretty small actual 'cities' with the suburbs being counted as seperate places.
Dec 17th, 2009 at 20:26 GMT
good quiz, but take off at least 2-3 minutes

I got them all with 1:39 left. Don't know why I forget of Ukraine after getting Russia.

Colombia vs Columbia. I usually lose that battle.

Canada only has three cities over one million. Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary. If metros were included, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Edmonton would also make the cut.
Dec 18th, 2009 at 19:22 GMT
@Ayreonaut While Canada does only have three cities over 1 million I'm pretty sure you have Calgary and Vancouver mixed up. http://www12.statcan.ca/census-recensement/2006/dp-pd/hlt/97-550/Index.cfm?TPL=P1C&Page=RETR&LANG=Eng&T=801&PR=0&SR=1&S=3&O=D

gorman03: I live in Calgary, it passed a million a few years ago. While the Vancouver region has double the people, the city of Vancouver only has around 600,000 people.

Cologne is short a few thousands (~996k), so Germany shouldn't be on the list.
Dec 19th, 2009 at 09:05 GMT
@Tirion: Yes, Cologne is a difficult case. If you check official German statistical data though, you´ll find that Cologne is by now over the mark of 1 million inhabitants.
Dec 20th, 2009 at 01:15 GMT
I was a bit surprised Saudi Arabia isn't on here -- I thought Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca, Medina and Dammam all have at least a million population.
Dec 21st, 2009 at 01:47 GMT
@marsco If you check the 'Statistisches Bundesamt' (Fedaral Office for Statistics) it says 995420 (31.12.2008). http://www.destatis.de/jetspeed/portal/cms/Sites/destatis/Internet/DE/Content/Statistiken/Regionales/Gemeindeverzeichnis/Administrativ/Aktuell/05__StaedteAktuell Estimates of the 'Statistisches Landesamt' (State office for statistics) predict that cologne will pass the million in 2010 again. (the last time cologne had more than a million citenzens was in 1975) http://www.general-anzeiger-bonn.de/index.php?k=loka&itemid=10001&detailid=671720

Surprised that there's no Italy on here. You would think Rome, Florence, Pisa, maybe Venice, and Milan.
Dec 21st, 2009 at 21:13 GMT
Dec 22nd, 2009 at 02:49 GMT
yeah i agree with making the quiz less time. i still had over 3 minutes left after so maybe taking of 2 minutes or so would be good.

Dec 22nd, 2009 at 11:38 GMT
Great quiz! @mybeaglebelle - Florence, Pisa and Venice are all way smaller than 1m. The largest cities are Rome (2.7m), Milan (1.3m), then Naples and Turin, which are just under 1m.
Dec 23rd, 2009 at 14:58 GMT
I love that Australia is on here (I'm from Melbourne), but by city limit's we only have 1, not 5. That's Brisbane with 1,027,847, all others fall way below. I believe the source has our metro stats confused, as it's very rare to hear anyone quoting city proper stats in Australia.
Dec 25th, 2009 at 22:32 GMT
Awesome quiz!I thought Ethiopia would have been on the list for sure.
