	ussr and russia are technically two different countries. West Germany and Germany are the same, as West Germany technically absorbed East Germany under the same government

	Why should Russia and USSR be grouped. A Ukrainian may have won a gold or a Georgian. Then Russia get's accredited. Russia wasn't the USSR, it was a member. The accurate thing to do is give the accreditation to the country who won 'at the time'. Perhaps you weren't switched on enough to think about it when you took the quiz, but many people will realise this. Good quiz!

	In regards to Soviet Union, East Germany and West Germany, I would recommend doing something such as putting as asterisk in their clues and specifying what it means (i.e. - "Asterisk (*) countries are specific to certain time periods). Otherwise, it was fun!

	Weird to see that even after their huge haul in Beijing, China is still behind the likes of slow-and-steady Hungary and Sweden, who ruled the roost 60, 70, 80 years ago. I agree it's weird to separate USSR from Russia, but completely acknowledge a decent percentage of Soviets were Ukrainian, Belarusian, etc. Germany and West Germany are the same, though.

	Would be interesting to see a quiz with an properly ordered medals table, i.e. listed first by number of golds, then silvers, then bronzes

	As a German, I am a bit insulted that you list Germany and West Germany as two separate countries. "West" Germany was always the Federal Republic of Germany. The Federal Republic of Germany never ceased to exist. "East" Germany, which was called the German Democratic Republic, DID cease to exist, when the GDR collapsed (20 years ago this week) and the "East" German territory returned to Germany.

	USSR and Russia - different Olympic committees and therefore different medal totals. The totals are not (technically) for a country but for an Olympic committee.

	Same goes for the Germanies. Germany is listed four times in the overall table: 'Germany' (pre-WWII and post 1990), 'West Germany', 'East Germany' and 'Untied Team of Germany', who competed in the 50s and 60s.

	Hamburger: You have to list them separately, as they competed separately. Combining them would not be fair to other countries. In some cases, both West Germany and East Germany won medals in events that are restricted to just one team. Examples: 1972, in women's 4x100 meter relay, West Germany won the gold medal, East Germany won the silver medal. 1972, in women's 4x400 meter relay, East Germany won the gold medal, West Germany won the bronze medal. 1972, in boxing, light middleweight, West Germany won the gold medal, East Germany won the bronze medal. 1976, in women's 4x100 meter relay, East Germany won the gold medal, West Germany won the silver medal. 1976, in boxing, welterweight, East Germany won the gold medal, West Germany won the bronze medal.

	What you fail to understand is that East Germany no longer exists (it was called Deutsche Demokratische Republiek). What English speakers refer to as "West Germany" was Bundesrepubliek Deutschland. Bundesrepubliek Deutschland never ceased to exist, and never changed its name. What was East Germany (a failed state) joined Germany. West Germany and Germany should be included as one list. East Germany can be listed separately as it was a completely different country. Imagine saying that medals won by the US before Hawaii became a state must be counted separately.

	What you are all failing to understand is; Australia, a country of less than 20 million (until 2000 Olympics) and a country which has traditionally struggled at Winter sports due to geography (total 9 Winter medals) still sits 11th in the World. Aussies own sport. :)

	@hammo - Australia is impressive, but their summer Olympic prowess is trumped by Hungary... a nation of less than 10 million, and only 6 winter Olympic medals.

	jsamuel it must be remembered that unlike Hungary, Australia did not have the benefit of the Eastern Bloc's drug program which has since been exposed. Since the Eastern Block collapsed, Australia has eclipsed Hungary by miles. Also, Australia hasn't got the benefit of close neighbouring countries to compete against in regional olympic events, which makes its tally all the more impressive. Finally, Australia has achieved 5 winter olympic gold medals although it has very little snow and events, unlike Hungary. Given all the above, Australia's achievements trump Hungary's.
